New project: Thorn Club Tour MK4. Not much on this online, but it was a good enough deal for an impulse purchase. According to the old 2018 catalogue, this'll fit 35-40 700 tyres, which is nice, but I obviously want to 650b it. A 70mm BB drop is a tad much, but the MK5 models have the same drop and are offered in 2.1 650b. Chainstays on MK5 are meant to be wider, but it sounds like I'll have some room. There's almost a finger of clearance on each side with 42s.
I like Thorn because they're a bit weird and have that holier-than-thou culty framebuilder thing going on. They're definitely doing their own thing. Insistence on rim brakes, infodumping in the catalogues, weird aesthetic sense... They're like Crust's autistic british cousin. Which is kinda cool. I get to build an autistic rando bike.

Re threadless, a lot of 90s 26in frames have 1 1/8 threaded steerers so you can stick a threadless fork and headset in. Or extend the existing steerer and make it a diy threadless, but that's brazing (or is it welding?). With a 1in you're kinda stuck.
I fancy M12, just seems a bit more solid attachment than M18, since you have the bosses might as well. Looks cleaner too. But I'm sure either will do. An M12 will come with its own mounting bolts, btw.

Very cool. Alee Denham covered these new bottle dynamos, they seem really nice, from memory. I think the only way to do the threadless in your situation is to extend the steerer, but that needs joining, idk if you can do that. But even then, you're with a 1'' steerer again, dunno if shims would work. Spa do a clean looking adapter. Velo orange tall stem with removable face plate is nice.
Go nitto on the rack, fuck it.

I think SP in stead of SON will save you like £200.
Also Re rims, I was thinking of sputniks to for a while but SJS and Spa hold other rims that cost the same, are half the weight, and are still considered pretty strong. Might be a good option.
Re dents, I think it's a total non-issue. Rust spots can go either way, but might be worth saving some money on not treating the dents? Or diy them?
Frame has sick braze ons, nice find.

I want something that resembles a road bike and uses modern standards
I always feel like threadless steeres are the only notable difference, but considering adapters, it's mostly aesthetic. But you do you. I second Spa frames, or maybe an odd used Thorn? There's a club tour kicking about on Ebay rn.

Why not an old dawes/raleigh/similar?
E.g., this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115831603453 is really nice, but there usually nice ones for less? E.g. the trek in the classifieds rn.

I forgot the name of this hill but I remember how the last time I was here, there was a cool lady who ran a used book store and knew this Syd guy to whom the cairn is dedicated to.
Apparently, he was a Dundeean who lost his sight in an industrial accident (iirc). As a man of the hills, he wanted someone to guide him through the Caringorms, so he sent an ad in the paper for a walking buddy. The guy in charge of the ad section offered to take him himself. At some point during the night, it was revealed that Syd also had an undisclosed wooden leg.

Still undecided on the cockpit, which I guess will determine the bike's identity?
So far I know that it'll have:
Alfine dynamo + edelux for that bling
Nitto M18 (if I find one)
WTB Horizon 650b 48 tyres and I'll be brave enough to finally try tubeless
Ryde Trace rims because that's the cheapest nice looking disc rim on SJS
Old stronglight sub compact
Boring big black BluemelsSomeone sell me some VO mudguards plsSome aliexpress calipers orAvid bb7s because they'recheapermore old school than TRPsDT shifters - I'm so happy I get to have dt shifters with a modern disc frame, it's so wild and dorky.
44cm compact drops
TRP single levers? That's what I have rn
