On tour, I used an older set of 6 speed down tube levers (shimano 600) with
a 9 speed cassette. I was pleasantly suprised by how well it worked. Shifting from low to high was really easy. once or twice i messed up shifting from high to low. That, however, was my fault for not 'reading the road' properly.
i enjoyed the hassle free nature of the set up and plan to put together a winter/tourer exactly as before. i may even consider 10 speed. -

I use dt levers on a couple of bikes. I enjoy the simplicity and 'modern 'indexing works so well. I find that I'm not changing gear a lot rather it's a case of anticipating gradients and the gear I need. I really like the uncluttered handlebar set up and besides I'm not sure I could manage to cable a modern brifter set up. Imagine on tour, if you dropped your bike and had a brifter break! What on earth would you do? I think i'll stick with a technology I'm familiar with.

What a lovely bike - chapeau to you sir. I bet this is dead comfy with the larger tyres?
