Stopped myself from reading too much that insanity last night.
Edit- Found it! Be careful with this rabbit hole, for real. There’s some interesting perspective on the why and the how Q and other cult madness take off, along with lots of rubbish of course. Tidbit I found useful is that, like any virus including viral memes, the selective pressure imposed by the environment results in the “strongest” (or most convincing) variants surviving, and the weaker ones dying off quietly. Curious to think of viral memes as exploiting our minds innate biases.
Worth suggesting moderation if you’re not in a good place or are particularly prone to falling down internet rabbit holes.

If I can however get a tool inside the freehub body to grip the cone nut on the DS, then I might be able to get some purchase on that pesky NDS lock nut
If you have a large Allen key or similar, something I’ve done at home before I had more tools was to fit an Allen key or similar between the cone flats and the inside of the freehub body, immobilising the cone. Then turning a wrench on the NDS to spin the axle and undo the freehub cone all the way. Once the axle is free of the hub you have more options to remove the stuck nut. GL!
-
I don't want to go at it with a hammer just yet, as the cone on the DS is still attached and I don't want to damage the bearings.
Outer nut is seized, got it. For applying heat on that nut, a hair dryer or pouring boiling water over it would stand the best chance. The radiator is going to be relatively slow heat, so the axle inside the nut is given more time to absorb heat and expand as well.
You’ll probably still need more leverage though. Either a vice, a longer tool, a pipe or other extender for the tool you have, a counterforce like a foot or a friend pressing down on the opposing tool... That’s the order of what I would’ve done in the shop if it was needed in a rush. If no rush, fill a cup with 1” of chemical tools like rust remover and put the nut in overnight.
Just to clarify the hammer suggestion: My suggestion is to tap a large flat screwdriver or a pencil-sized punch along the dust cap where I’ve put orange dots and all around. Hopefully the cap isn’t too rusted on, and it should shift in towards the hub enough to expose the cone flats.
If you look at the part I’ve surrounded with a green rectangle, it looks like there’s a 1mm space between the steel ring and the yellow/green spacer on the axle. I think that space is there because the steel ring is a metal dust cap (like @Alexnharvey also thinks and helpfully rephrased), and it’s made its way out and is now covering the spanner flats on the cone. The dust cap isn’t attached to the cone except by a tight fit, and possibly rust in this case.
-
Hard to tell in the pic but does the hollow angle have a hexagonal hole, for a 5mm Allen key? Often, hubs that don’t have opposing nuts on th NDS have that.
If the diagram is accurate, Another possibility is that the metal shield around the cone on the NDS has shifted outboard, covering the interface of the cone that would take a spanner. If that’s the case, some wd40 or a hairdryer and some gentle taps with a hammer and punch might be enough to move the shield inward. Edit- from the pics it isn’t obvious what the issue is.

What does that even look like in this day and age? We can have little Fascism, as a treat?
My idea of reconciliation tended more towards racial and socioeconomic reconciliation. You can’t achieve true reconciliation and healing without mutual understanding, and that means addressing the issues that led to the injury in the first place. I focused on ingrained racial discrimination, systemic socioeconomic disparity, and an acceptance that everyone deserves dignity and should be treated equally under the Law. Every time a politician had called for National Healing (TM), this is what they allude to. What they actually want is people not to make their jobs difficult and instead forget any inconvenient truths (eg, specific republicans actively supported a coup).
Fascism can fuck right off. People who are brainwashed into fascism need to be confronted and supported to break free from that bs; if they won’t or can’t, then society should shun them as their ideology is a mortal threat to any peaceful democracy.

but 74 million Americans did vote for a man that is objectively, a fascist and a white supremacist
I don’t know the author, but someone coined a phrase I’ve found myself using all too often: “Not everyone who voted for trump is a racist, but every one of them decided that blatant racism wasn’t a deal breaker”. Same for his fascism, same for his misogyny, same for his sexual predation etc ad nauseum.

Good trick for initial inspection is to tap gently on and near the damage with a coin. If it’s buggered, it will make a dull ‘thunk’ and will feel like you’re tapping on hard rubber. Compare with the healthy carbon around it, which should make a sharp ‘clank’ and will feel like the coin is hitting a hard surface.
Edit- if you’re concerned, a pro inspection isn’t a bad idea, and it’ll be cheaper than the dental bills from a fork failing on you at speed...

reconcile
fuck that.
Presumably fuck this too then?I understood @greenhell to mean ‘fuck the historically consistent trend of forgetting the horrible things the other side said and did and pretending like it won’t repeat itself in 4-8 years’.
In which case, I agree, fuck that. All for real reconciliation though.

Hey folks. I’m hoping someone might be able to advise on the following: Does the electrical wiring actually match the diagram? (Not sure why the diagram pics rotates when I upload it)
Edit- I’m not sure why I didn’t get it before, but the switch is closed on #2, open on #3, so the wiring seems correct to me now... 🤔
I’m replacing the Hive control for the heating, and that’s what’s under the Hive’s cover.

After watching the past 5 years from afar but through the lenses of my family back home, I am hopeful long term that things will calm down.
There’s two types of power-seekers, in my experience. Those who will look at Qanon followers and think “OMG, these people need to be helped and this can never happen again”, and those who will think “This is a fantastic opportunity. How can I get these sheeple to do my bidding against their own interests?”.
It won’t be a good, boring government until the first ones overcome the second ones.

For three years, adherents of the sprawling QAnon conspiracy theory awaited a so-called Great Awakening, scouring anonymous web postings from a shadowy “Q” figure and parsing statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump, whom they believed to be their champion.
On Wednesday, they grappled with a harsh reality check: Trump had left office with no mass arrests or other victories against the supposed cabal of Satan-worshipping pedophile cannibal elites, especially Democrats, he was ostensibly fighting.
These people need to be carefully de-programmed. Lots of disappointed and disenfranchised fanatics make easy pickings for other extremist groups to brainwash.

Selle Italia XR saddle. £10. Came stock on a Wilier, never used or used once but no clamp marks, small scratch at the very back from storage and discounted accordingly.
Fibrax Aero levers. £SOLD Brand new. Best levers I’ve ever used: automotive grade composite, ergonomic grip, flat smooth nose to fit under the toughest tyre. Designed and made in the UK.
Tektro drop bar brake levers. SOLD Bought them NOS online, used for 2 days on my SS then went to flat bars, so they’re like new. They’re kids’ sized I think, but they fit my size 9 (230mm circumference) hands really well.
Tektro RX 4.1 brake lever. £5. Good used condition.
9sp HG400 cassette, 11-34. £SOLD Used by the gf I think, no wear that I can see.
Felt front hub, 28h. £5 Bearings are perfect, but I’ve lost interest in building a wheel with it.
.
.
£1 or one free with any purchase:BMX pegs, 4cm diameter. GONE I think, no falls or rust but many light scratches from storage.

This discussion is maybe more suited to a lecture hall, or at least a pub, but I’ll try putting my core thoughts across.
the man has damaged the US more than any single individual
Putting this all on Trump is mistake. This has been the Republicam playbook for then past 20 years, with Trump a useful foil.
Depends on what you mean by ‘all this’. The gop leadership of the last 70 years bears responsibility for so much of what is wrong with the US today, but I think trump still possibly has had and will have worse impact than any single other actor. He’s a grown man with agency, so even if he’s enacting others’ grand plans he’s still responsible for his actions. Please see further details on those thoughts, below.
It depends on what you mean by damage, but I think Regan carried out more structural and long term damage.
Reagan is a contender, sure, as is Nixon, but we’re seeing Reagan with 40 years of hindsight. We also happen to have access to most of what Reagan authorised while trump and his collaborators have purposely covered up their tracks at every turn. trump’s impact, from the birther scheme until today, has seen few saving graces. His real impact won’t be known for a decade, but I’d bet dollars to donuts what we find out is only going to get worse.
Also when you look at the loss of life in Vietnam and extra judicial killings through the 60s and 70s, on a body count he scores pretty well compared to quite a few others.
Body count, as you put it, is a difficult point to make and to counter on a forum discussion but I’ll have a go.
9 years’ of Vietnam war deaths are estimated to be 1.2 million people, on the high side. trump’s actions and immediate policies only on COVID have resulted in at least 1/3 of those number of deaths in the US in a single year. It’s unknowable what would have happened if trump hadn’t dismantled the White House team keeping watch for epidemic risks; or if he had taken covid seriously and led the charge internationally to contain and cure it. What is knowable is that he chose the path of contemptuousness and self-serving ego every time, others be damned, and a year later... well here we are. Let’s wait until they eventually add in preventable deaths from unavailable health care, deaths in ICE/police custody, deaths from drug OD, deaths in Yemen, etc. These aren’t issues he could have resolved with the stroke of a pen, but what did he do at all to resolve them? Most of these problems he’s actively encouraged and enabled, as well as doing what he could in dismantling the systems of checks and balances.
You mentioned extra judicial killings but you know they haven’t stopped (BLM). Chicago PD, for example, are alleged to still operate multiple secret detention centres, where people of a certain skin colour are dehumanised in all sorts of ways and spend months without any due process.
Honestly, I think this is where his crassness and overt cuntishness clouds peoples views. If you put stoking already present divisions to one side, what are his top 5 onerous and irreversible policies?
His impact isn’t measured solely in his policies. I’ve spent some time writing this response so not going to go into writing an essay on his 5 worst policies or his 5 worst impacts, but I’ll throw 5 bad ones out there: COVID (more US deaths than WW2), racial division (how do you think 46 mill. Black Americans feel nowadays?), dismantling an honest attempt at public healthcare (people died because of $450/month for insulin), dismantling checks and balances for corporations (tax evasion, environmental policies, billions to his friends and millions to himself, etc etc), destroying what remained of US reputation abroad after 9/11. Add a bonus, unnecessarily sadistic one: taking immigrant children, deporting their parents, and putting the kids up for adoption in the US with no clear paper trails.
It could be argued that Reagan tried to do something good for the US (I’m not a fan though). What good did trump do? If bringing the military home comes to mind, consider that he probably did that for their support for his putsch (the letter from 10 former SecDef points to that conclusion). (And their votes)
The way he’s debilitated people’s trust in the US system of governance, in the US and abroad, is the worst wound he’s caused to the US as an entity. The courts, the checks and balances, the righteousness of the Law... it all only matters if the system works, and the system only works if the people trust and believe in it, because it’s a fiction that only becomes real if we trust it is real. That trust is now broken. If the US is to survive they need to repair it.
