A friend of mine gave me his old Vitus D26 a couple of years ago. I tarted it up a bit with hydraulic discs, mudguards, wald basket, new cockpit etc. I got quite a lot of use out of it as a rainy day commuter or just whenever I didn't want to wear a bag:
Anyway, said friend has moved house and wants to start commuting again so I'm going to give him the bike back, but I wouldn't mind a replacement. I liked the bike a lot but did often think I would't mind having some gears on it, to that end I've been looking around for something with a similar geometry, mudguard mounts, a fork that could take a nice rack and some sort of gearing (1x or hub probably fine) To that end I've found:

https://www.damianharriscycles.co.uk/prod/tou_0011_nb/bombtrack-arise-geared-touring-2019-bikeThe bombtrack is obviously more fuckable, and I would get it from the top boys at my LBS, but the Vitus is about a grand cheaper even when I factor in rack + hydro add ons. Also neither of them are 26ers but it seems like they're a dying breed anyway. I guess 650b or whatever might be an option but I don't know how that actually handles on a bike. (I really rated the 26er aspect of the Vitus frankly, felt like it span up to speed nice and quick)
Does anyone else have any ideas? Open to trying to build something myself if it comes down to it, though I've never done anything like that before. Also don't mind waiting to buy something second hand (I could just try and rebuy the same bike I know but...I really want to have some gears)

Is it possible to use the Carradice bagman quick release on its own, or do you have to have a wire thingy going round as well? I would only be putting light stuff in the seatpack anyway (mostly clothes perhaps lunch) Basically can I just use the widget below:

I've bought a dahon cadenza, sort of a 26 inch hybrid that folds. The frame can take discs but I'm wondering if I put hydros on there would it be a problem with the folding mechanism? What's the max radius you can bend a hydro tube? Can't be bothered with cable discs so would just stick to Vs if it came down to it

In the end I cycled to Bury St Edmunds, got a coffee at Guat's Up, carried on to Stowmarket and got the train home thus managing to have the wind behind me for the whole day.
Ncn51 was pretty boring from Cambridge to Newmarket though I must say it improved after that. There's a YHA in Bury so could potentially use that as an overnight and then carry on to... Somewhere

Hello. I suddenly have a whole Friday and half of Saturday free and I would like to do some kind of mini trip setting off from Cambridge with I guess a BnB or hostel overnight. 35mm tyres on the bike but minimal experience with this kind of thing. I did a nice trip from king's Lynn to sheringham overnighting in deepdale earlier in the year and something like that would appeal again? I was thinking maybe something via Norwich? No idea really. Does anyone have any ideas?
Also this is my first post :)

I asked this in the any questions thread but maybe I should have asked here.

Tldr; looking for a replacement for my 26 inch single speed commuter. Want discs, reasonably big tyres, mudguard and rack mounts and some options for gears. I've been considering the bombtrack arise geared, Vitus d29 and lately the Marin Nicasio RC. Does anyone else have any ideas?
