I visited the big smoke last week for three days. I came down from the north east, i live in a relatively rural area now and i see maybe 3 cycle commuters a month and genuinely feel unsafe on my bike when riding to work due to the high speed roads involved and lack of infrastructure. I also ride my singlespeed but live in a valley so i have a lot of hills.
Consequently for three days i was wandering about london like a kid.. so many cool bikes (thats a ss, thats a fixie... bloody hell a brompton, i love those. jesus its so flat :) ) and you have segregated cycle lanes, bike racks. Its heaven, you lucky buggers. Mind you the rents a bit high when you look in estate agents. All in all i'd quite like to live in london. -
oddly i was due to do the original route through the hills with a mate but he cancelled last minute as his missus was heavily pregnant and he didnt fancy being miles away in case she hatched. So we called an audible on the morning and swapped to the wall route. Theres still some climbing but no where near as much.

Just came across this thread or i would have commented earlier. 4 yrs ago, according to my fb feed, i cycled the C2C but spread it over 3 days and based myself in Hexham and used the trains to get to the stages. I used the reiver route which effectively follows Hadrian's Wall roughly. I used my singlespeed with a freewheel hub because hills. It was pretty good and the wall route is eminently doable. The best bit is by far getting off the train at Whitehaven with a dozen blokes pushing tricked out MTB and Road bikes who then see the overweight bald idiot with a singlespeed and a C2C t shirt with just giving info.
'Jesus you're not doing it on that'
'Weight saving fella, that derailleur looks heavy'and away I went.
The route i used was significantly less hilly than yours and the daily distance was reduced to about 40-50 miles. Even then i was ruined at the end of it.

It was my second, the GF and i took her kid the first week so we ended up walking bits of it. This time i ran at her pace and only had mild shin pain for the first half mile and some tenderness Sunday. Seems to have eased right off now at work so looks hopeful. Slow and steady for a while until my legs adapt i think.

Folks, I've been given a dawes horizon by my neighbour. She's old but solid and surprisingly comfy to ride.
I'm always looking for that one bike to rule em all. The all purpose steed I go to work and pub on, then bugger off on all day rides in the country. This has that potential.Unfortunately It'll need some tlc first. The seat post is seized, bits are rusty etc as its been sat for a few years in his shed.
The seat post is the first priority. I tried wd40, a hammer, a huge lever on a pipe wrench, a bigger hammer and I think next is a flame unless anyone has better ideas. I not too fussed about the paint on the frame as there's a respray in its future. I'll post pics as I go. I'll probably ask for a lot of advice too as it's my first project.

I find that after a week the pains pretty much gone. And after maybe a half mile of gentle jogging its gone too. Im just looking to remove that inconvenience. The first time it happened i took a month off running and then eased slowly into it. This time the pain is significantly less like ive banged my shins on a coffee table. I'll try the stretches and back off the running for a bit.
Its worth a shot, cheers folks. -
I've been happily declining into middle age for a while, but after a health scare a few years back i started doing a bit here and there. I like cycling obviously but i really enjoy running. Unfortunately i seem to pick up shin pain easily at the moment. I never used to when i ran more often so i'm hoping it'll wear off. I've slowly increased my miles although im deliberately only running once a week.to the point where i'm comfortable pootling about the park run. I've had gait analysis and suchlike and bought the expensive trainers (worth it for the sales bloke looking aghast when i said i usually ran in converse or boots depending on the weather).
The shin pain is still flaring up occasionally so i was wondering if the more experienced runners here have any ideas to limit it and eventually remove it all together? -

Finally back on the bike, had a day off work yesterday and me and the mrs went for a wee ride about the country, lunch and tings. Remarkably civilised and relaxed as opposed to my normal frantic thrashing when im late for work. Id love to report general fuckwittery but all was serene.
Should probably put this in the 'I confess' thread but i took my hated MTB cos hills. Gears are damn handy. Sorry. -

Saw this thread and am looking at shaking my diet up with regards to weight loss. I'm trying gym three times a week followed by a protein shake for recovery. I did OK at first but I'm utterly lazy when it comes to cooking/lunch at work. Do you think I could use this as a midday meal and have a normal evening meal?
I tried stuff like slim fast a few years back and was just hungry all the time. Does this fill you?

Rode my battered old plug today after neglecting bicycles for a couple of years. I love my plug, my mtb is a hateful uncomfortable thing so I always ride the plug when I can. It's normally so quiet and relaxing. A couple of hours riding and it's rattling like a couple of skeletons going at it in a biscuit tin.
Checked all the usual bits, everything that should be tight is. Maybe it's chain slap, nope.
Stood scratching head, had a cuppa, swore at it.
Gave up in disgust and tool the tail pack of and walked into the house.... The rattle followed me. Bloody keys and change in the pack. I'm an imbecile. -
Bravo sir, Bravo.
