So seeing as half term is about to be over... decided I better try and get this bike done - stupid as now I have only 3 days to do it before school starts again and I NEED a child carrying device. Nothing like a deadline to focus the mind. Easy I thought - just strip it down Thursday night, clean it Friday night - Assembly can be squeezed in over the weekend and worst case I do a late one Sunday to get it at least rideable.
So I mixed myself a g and t - ordered a curry (thinking this will only take 45mins tops ) and broke out the tools. Predictably things did not go smoothly. Drive side crank threads were stripped. I tried various forum ideas on the subject - blowtorch, penetrating spray, hitting it in a variety of ways, riding around with the bolts off. Curry arrived. Shit then got a bit more ‘invasive’ hacksaw, Mole grips and my new pride and joy dewalt drill. Because it was an old chain set with rivets I had to snap the rings off using the mole grips and brute force. Then I hacksawed and drilled the fuck out of the alloy to make a slot into which I could get a screwdriver in to prize the bugger apart. Gradually it started to wiggle and then, bingo. Couple of pics for any perverts out there into this kinda filfth. Wierd old school cartridge bb situation then discovered - presume fitted in 94- plastic (or maybe glassfibre ?) cup on the drive side - steel on the non drive. Much effort to remove.

Thanks y'all @t0-ster already helped me out with chainset advice! My spannering skills are medium poor so we'll see how it goes...

Um'd and ahh'd about tyre choice and then caught these Smart Sam's on PX for cheap so decision was made. Admittedly a bit over the top for the school run / commute but i do have the option of a former railway track / trail and a field to cross if I fancy also maybe a-bit helpful if we get another snowy winter - 700x40c hoping I can squeeze them in under some 53 Bleumels. Couldn't resist the typography and stupidly minimal WTB grips for 5 quids. First Nitto purchase for me too and very excited about the bars.

So the basis for this project is a Marin Stinson. My dad bought it in 1994 and commuted on it for many years, my brother had it for a bit a few years back and left it locked up on Exmouth market where it was driven into by a road sweeper. It survived but the natty colour matching stem/bar combo was bent tf. It languished in the back of my office for a while until two years ago when I moved out to the burbs and needed something functional to ferry kids to nursery etc. Being skint on account of the house move I threw some Clark’s v brakes, a basic hybrid wheel set and some marathons on it - strapped on the kiddie seat and off we went. Two years later it’s high time for a reboot. Parts have been ordered...bullmooses were first to arrive...

Wifebiek fixed up nice. Marin Stinson re-style as-1x on trend-retro-functional workhorse underway. This thanks to a bloody nice chap from Suffolk who personally delivered a set of Deore LX cranks to me about 14hrs after i bought them.
So time to think about that colour some more....
Pearl Opal Green -Kinda classy - maybe
Pearl Maus grey - Boring but stylish
Rasberry Red - Probably the one...Probably Aurum Finishing for powder and won't bother about period resto decals. Bieks for riding innit.

We've been running the bobike one maxi for two years on the seat tube mount - I think the seat itself is good - I like the raised sides for them to feel a bit more enclosed and the buckle is quick to use and feels v. secure but the mounting irritates me - the seat tube mount is v. bouncy and also now wiggles from side to side a bit. There is also a fair bit of play in the metal flange which ultimately stops the thing tipping back. So when riding sans kid - the whole thing wobbles and squeaks a bit. There is no backup loop around the seat post either which i notice is included on the new model and just seems a bit of a no brainer in the first place.
Im looking at the Thule Yepp nexxt Maxi as a replacement - anyone got a verdict / recommendation ?

Thanks. Yeah bit of a bugger that one - i looked at doing a mod to the tektros but wasn’t confident of making it work given current tools / parts on hand - it’s definitely do able though - in order to use the existing cable clips you could also flip the Caliper and run it backwards so the caliper arms are on the rhs.
Running the cable up the seat tube looked too ugly to my eyes and Didn’t seem to result in much less bending / friction.
The way I did it required one reasonably unobtriusive cable tie and looks okay ish . As for friction yes there is more than on the front but the brake seems perfectly functional.
The only other option was to put the caliper on the lower seat post bridge plate situation - resulting in a pretty straight run which is the way they do it on those Freddie grubb neo retro mixte jobs - I tried it but with the larger long arm tekros they stick out way too far and looked like they would just get bashed up / bent

Can't compete with the above but here's my wife's 1984 Raleigh Wisp I originally fixed it up back in 2012 as a SS commuter with 27 1/4 wheelset. Just spent some time this weekend fitting a new SA 3 speed 700c wheelset and replacing shitty weinnmans for tektro long drops etc - rear kiddie seat to follow - for suburbo - functional biz.

Aggressively overtaken by a hot hatch today - wing mirror clipped my bars and over I went . They didn’t stop . Got some grazes and a stiff neck - lucky really but mostly just fuming about shitty suburban drivers. Swear I felt safer when i was going up and down the Holloway Road every day. Fuck zone 5
Yep saw them - magic - made me think of Ian Sinclair’s writing on urban hinterlands
