Had a bit of a pick away at the Donohue
Firstly, the corrosion on the inside of the nds chainstay looks to be just surface, which is good
Took a bastard file to it, along with some other spots this evening lol will which appear structurally sound
The main thing is that the whole builder-branding appears from research to be pretty annoying badging
The late 90’s frameset likely was assembled in Czech factories, which is good - but Paul had not part in making it (no frame numbers or any identifying stamps being another giveaway apparently) who also did the majority of TIG welded 853 frames that various UK ‘brands’ had badged
So, plan now is to strip back the paint and get it refinished as a no-name blank
Seems more honest to the people who actually made the frame -

Have a bit of a thing for bringing bieks back from the brink where they might, without a little attention, become practice for frameWelders or people who make sculptures for front gardens.
Nothing against either, but some frames are just too good to end up in the recycling.
Having got a few of these on the go right now (and having done quite a few and passed them on to new rider-owners over the time I’ve been on here) wondered if anyone facing a similar hankering might find my struggling useful or galvanise you to do the same :)
So on the bench at the moment (because why have a hard time doing one thing when you could be doing three), are;- Roberts 531 road frame
- Roberts 531ST f&f
- Paul Donohue 853 f&f
There are more, but who’s rushing.
The first Roberts, more on that later but the BB was seized stuck. But not any more. Three dips in caustic soda didn’t melt it out but freed the threads enough for All THe tOols to work it.
The second Roberts is lovely.
Again, terminal BB and threads so luckily someone chamfered the faces and I serviced a Mavic and all seems ok.
It really deserves a full Argos-quality respray but who’s got money for that? Plus it’s an amazing two-tone thing, most of it’s ok, so sanded back the corrosion and prime and will then lacquer - so the light-restoration will be visible.
And of course, triples :)The Donohue I think has done a few rounds on here, and again, is lovely.
Few more issues here, lots of stuck bits but as I have my fuck-you-hat on, everything’s starting to come good.
After a good wash, can see what’s needed to do next.More to follow if anyone’s got this far.
