So the timber arrived and we're now done. I say we as I pretty much wimped out and got someone to do it as I worked out I was way out of my depth. Probably no longer worthy of the DIY thread though. Needs some filler and paint to finish but adds some original character back to the property. Just the decorating, installing the radiator and the floor sanding to go then I can move on to the kitchen. Oh, and whoever said that Douglas Fir, when cut smells amazing was bang on. House smells like a winter wonderland.

Been down to Champion this morning and Siberian Larch was out of the question due to supply chain issues however I've got 15 meters of 26mmx26mm Douglas Fir coming next Friday. Far from cheap though but it means it's one for thing I can tick off the long list of things to be done to get the hallway finished!
Thanks once again. -

Hello helpful people of the DIY thread.
I'm looking to reinstate the original pattern on our stairs as, somewhere over the years, every second spindle has been knocked out and the "I" pattern removed meaning it's not legal and I can fit my big head between the gaps. The spindles are 1" square so will pop down to Champion Timber in Bromley to get some made up. Question is, is anyone able to tell by looking at the grain in the timber what the originals are made from? Another pic of original pattern from a Rightmove add for similar property on street. -

So my seed potatoes have arrived. First Early Mccain variety that produced excellent results for me last year. QQ re chitting. Last year, I just purchased seed potatoes later in the year which were already in an advanced state of growth from Homebase. How much sunlight do the potatoes like when chitting? Just leave the box open in the corner of the room or put in strong sunlight on the windowsill or just bung em straight in the soil?
I've increased the size of the potato patch this year by 400% by taking up more of the patio and digging in compost from the hotbin. Soil is looking much improved however still needs another 200l at least to finish the bottom right hand corner off. -
Right, teeny weeny Rudbeckia have gone in today. First time trying them after seeing them at Wisley last year. Are they susceptible to being mowed down by snails or slugs? Alliums also seem to have been multiplying underground since last year and 15 have now become 60. Hopefully put on a good display.
Iris' seem to have sustained quite a bit of early slug or snail damage after doing really well the past few years. -
Deadheaeded the Hydrangeas today (probs be a mega frost tomorrow) and planted a Euphorbia (Albanian Spurge) and some Echinacea Purpurea in the front garden border. Got some Rudbeckia and some first early seed potatoes coming next week. The Japonica Kerria that my neighbour gave me last year is in flower too and adds something nice in the mix.

Trying to keep the momentum up at the moment with small projects round the house so am taking this lovely sunray pattern door down to the glass shop next week to get some clear safety glass installed and am gong to plane it down and swap it out as the kitchen door. I won it in an eBay auction last year for £20 and had it shipped down from Blackpool.
