stumbled across this merino wool company in Derbyshire ( https://armadillomerino.com/ ) and have just received three tops from them. Very impressed. Never really worn merino before but it is super comfy and doesn't smell at all / get you sweaty

I've gone on holiday for a few weeks so I won't be near the bike for a while. Constable I agree fully; get it running as cheaply as I can and see how it goes. Bianchi picks negative sorry and no idea what size it is as I'm away. I'm not to sure on MTB sizes anyway but I can do measure the various tube lengths.

I have been deliberating for a while how I can get into mountain biking on a budget and I've been looking for a retro MTB for a long time. I haven't got the money for something newer and this will really be just for bashing wheelies and short trips.
Anyway, everyone is clearing out their uni rooms this week and this bike was 2 minutes from mine with 'free bike' written on some paper taped to it. It is way too small for me, being 6ft5 (I think every mountain bike I've ever looked at is), but I reckon it's worth keeping.
It is a complete dawes, with shimano 200GS groupset with biopace chainrings. No idea about the wheels or anything else. I've never really messed about with mountain bikes or canti brakes before so this should be a learning process for me.

Eroica in Britain isn't at all strict; cables can be tucked under bar tape etc and no one is going to scrutinise the year of your bike. However, 100% use downtube shifters!
I'll be there again that weekend so I'll try and spot you from your bike. Just a quick one having just read all of this thread - does a bike from 1993 have the same spacing as modern hubs? I want to do similar on an older frame, but always thought the dropouts were narrower than 130mm. Nice project :)

So I managed to pick up what I believe is a 1970s Raleigh Clubman locally. Seemed really original and complete on the advert, and the seller confirmed it had been in a shed most of its life. My size, 531, suntour + sugino mixed groupset, completely unworn but very original 27inch gum wall tyres.
Once my exams are over I plan to restore it but I have some thoughts/ questions for those interested. Once the pictures are added these will become more clear but for now:1) How would you go about cleaning the frame up? degrease and a polish probably won't do because there is some surface rust. If I could match the paint I could tape up the decals and rub/spray the frame followed by a clear lacquer.
2) Can I simply mount the downtube shifters on the stem and does some can of shim exist for this? I've seen it done a lot and it's more practical / ergonomic.
3) This is a minor point but I am a fan of details, and the wearing off of the suntour and sugino decals bugs me, though there aren't replacements on eBay. Any thoughts?- Does anyone have some swept back flat bars for sale please and a longer quill stem please?
Thanks :)

Legend, will PM you. Some more details in case anyone else can help.
First year economics student at Sheffield Uni, looking to enjoy work when i graduate and not just work at a bank and hate my job (though I may do this and it could be enjoyable). Strong academic background, huge interest in beer and have worked at a pub since I was 17. I do some buying for them in Sheffield and other bits. It's hard to convey my enthusiasm/experience here. I want to use my 3/4 month summer productively, so I'm looking to help out a brewery or do something in the industry. If anyone has any ideas please get at me. I've spoken to some small breweries but it's not the type of thing they do.
Cheers

thanks for the replies, please can I see a photo @Alphaone
After classic looks so probably silver pedals please, ideally with metal cages and black leather straps -
They're sks chromoplastics. Really fiddly to fit around the disk brakes but the rack makes it easier.
