That s the very bit I walked down ( I only had a rear brake at the time :) found myself on the wrong side with no way of getting over !

The best camping is on the football field in Gaiole, it cost 20 Euros for the weekend last year, about a 2 min walk to the centre of town, a really good atmosphere, there's a marquee and clubhouse/bar so the only time I was ever actually in the tent was when I was asleep :)

I'm going to drive next year, although getting the train there from Pisa airport was pretty easy, I got lost coming out of Seina, spent 2 hours cycling aimlessly around the city before really setting off, some guy (who spoke no English) with dog,wife and son in a pickup gave me lift for the last 5k, dropped me at the football pitch :) I need to bin the 52/42 or sort out a bigger rear before next year though

a tip that's too late to be any use, but if you replace the wheelbags in your padded bike bag with a double bodyboard bag then you can fold the bike bag into it and cycle with the lot on your back,
