What ratio would you guys recommend for a slightly flabby, unfit 46yr old. Converting a Raleigh Scorpio on a really tight budget to SS, so using the existing inside ring of 42 what would you recommend for the back?? Would 16 be ok?!

Going to try the risla / post it trick as the bike I picked up for my first SS build, a Raleigh Scorpio must be the most unpopular bike ever, never in any databases.
At least the seatpost isn't stuck though, read horror stories about that

You know I didn't even look to se if these were friction or not. Let me take a closer look and I'll report back.
Had a dig around in the bits boxes and found another stem and a crappy old steel drop bar which I've flopped and chopped. Ride around the block seems comfortable. I'll try them on the hills on Monday. I wonder how much I'll miss the drops on those windy mornings.

Been lurking for a while but finally signed up. Not been on a bike for a few years but just picked up an old racer off ebay to convert to SS.
Based in the Midlands but work / stay in London in the week
It's pretty flat where I intend riding apart from the hill back up to my house so sounds good
