That looks good and very flashy! How much did you pay for it?

Yeah they have done a fantastic job. They had to do a lot of work on the frame itself before the re-spray, a fair bit of filing etc. Definitely brought this frame back from the dead. It was around £350, they said it was an A1 finish which is their top end job.

I will post some better pics once it is built up.

Finally got the lowdown on 653 the other day just for anyone who is interested.

    Hello Tim,
Although we don't have staff in the office now from around that time, Terry
Bill (worked here ~ 48 years until 2010) did tell me that Eddy Merckx wanted
more compliance in the front triangle, and less in the rear stays. So 653
had 753 heat-treated stays, and a 531 front triangle. I think Indurain also
    used 653.

Because 753 was heat-treated and at that time few builders had used this
kind of material, the tubing had to be silver brazed into lugs.531 could be
fillet brazed or silver soldered . So I would guess that accounts for the 2
methods used on the frame mentioned.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi yoav,

Thanks a lot for the info, a friend who knows bob and also has one of his frames said that the bb was probably cinelli but the crowns might possibly be reynolds. I thought as much re the brazing when I saw these pics too but wasn't sure if they were welded. Haven't had chance to see it in person yet.

Seems like Bob was a pretty good craftsman when it came to his later frames, I think this may be 1985,1986. I'm glad to know how the bike was made. The 653 tube is a mixed set right? Usually 753 rear triangle and 531 front end?

Once I have got a few more posts in I will start a current projects thread and you should be able to see the build.

    Hey,

I was just wondering if anyone could help me identify what kind of fork crowns these are, and also if the frame has been brazed or welded.....

    Some pics,

This my dads Bob Griffin frame that I have just got back from argos cycles and was curious about how it was made and what sort of parts he was using at the time. I know he was 753 certified so he definitely could braze, but I am pretty new to all this stuff so not 100% sure.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

I have just joined after lurking for a while. Just thought I would introduce myself.

Originally from Worcestershire, but I have been living in London for 8 years now because of work and have resided in Hackney from day one.

Currently in the process of renovating my dads old Bob Griffin that he had made in the early 80's. It has just come back from argos cycles, after a good bit of filling and a re spray it is looking good as new.

I have some before and after pics that I will post up in the builds/projects thread for anyone to have a peek at if anyone would be interested.

Grew up around cycling because of my dad but after hard times in the family could never really afford a bike to ride around on. sob sob sob

Now things have turned for the better I can finally get riding. Looking forward to learning from you guys and hopefully contributing as much as possible to this forum.

    Cheers.
