Point taken.
The famous Mavic R-Sys. Compressed carbon spokes which spontaneously explode in the presence of aliens (or something like that).I was thinking more along the lines of home assembled using reliable or known (at least to yourself) components. If you have a reasonable number of steel spokes (ie 20-24+) tensioned reasonably equally to well within the limits of the hub/rim, and assuming you are using a standard spoke pattern, then I would think the wheel won't collapse without warning.
Then again, maybe I just need to think that to get on my bike... -
