Just a quick update - I bought the Onza kit with 15t which went onto the Uniglide without difficulty (does leave a slight 3 mm gap close to the spokes). I'm using a old threaded track to keep it together. I'm also using the Biopace 42t chainring - the result is just fantastic - 9kg all in, great acceleration & no probs with the gradients round here. In fact I can't believe I've dumped all those gears with so little problem. I've become a BASS (born again single speeder)
Btw what a great w/e - dumped Canon for Pentax (old K100D Super) & discovered the joys of gorgeous, old metal, giveaway manual lenses!.
Thanks all for your help!

Thanks ffm! A HG freehub might well be the answer - I was being cheap & hoping to get away with the existing UG but the frame 531C & Mavic wheels prolly justify the outlay. I'm not in a massive hurry so could try the BB lockring if you're really happy sending it?
I think I'll experiment a bit with 42t front & rear sprockets before buying a proper one!
I plan to use the existing crank with the existing 42t & lose the 52t - guess I need new chainring bolts?

Out of interest, why do you want to use HG spacers (and why do you think that the spacers are HG-specific)? Can't you just use standard smooth (unsplined) spacers like the ones that you get in kits like these? If you've got a UG cassette then you can use one of the sprockets from that. Locking the whole lot onto the freehub is the only remaining issue, if you want to try a BB lockring I've got one here for postage (in post no.4 under "Drivetrain").
Someone who understands the plight of an ignoramus - I didn't know spacers were not splined & would fit UG & HG! I do indeed want to buy a kit of several spacers but no ebay seller has answered!
I do have the small threaded sprocket but would prefer a prettier solution - so I'll gladly try your lockring - thanks!
Ok, I'll try an existing sprocket & see before investing in a dedicated one.
Thanks again for your help :)
Should have mentioned the reach required is a whopping 75mm! Nutted ideally too. Gotta love the old 26 x 1 3/8 wheels!
