I was fiddling around with my (2nd hand, well used) bike the other day. I removed the handlebars from the stem. There was something wrapped round the handlebars, under the stem. It was like tin foil, but a little thicker/more substantial.
I threw the 'tin foil' away. Now I cannot get the handlebars to stop moving. I have tighten the bolt in the stem as much as possible.
Any ideas guys?
many thanks.

Yes lockrings are reverse thread, probably should have warned you about that, sorry man.
I knew that. Yet I still messed up that (cheap, nasty) lock ring tool.
I've tried a hammer and a chisel, still no luck!
If I do manage to get the lock ring and the cog off and, assuming my threads are fucked, would I be able to put a cog and a lock ring on the other side of the hub and ride fixed?
I'm not sure, because the other side of the hub looks like this? Is this freewheel only?
Thank you!
made a shim out of a can. Worked perfectly.
Thank you!
