http://cycleseven.org/bicycle-gear-inch-calculator
Here is a good GI calculator, it looks like for a 700 wheel with a 23 tire its 26.26, not 27, so GI actually a bit lower.
Size of tire makes a cignificant difference!! -
Ok I have been a little confused as to what this GI is all about so i looked it up.
Found this:
where
gi = gear inchesdwd = drive wheel diameter (for a 700 wheel its calculated to be 27')fct = number of front chainring teethrct = number of rear sprocket teethRaymond you were pulling a GI of 79.19 I think a 16t on the back should be good for you! This would get you down to a 74.25 which should be good over those hills!
You had 44t front and 15t back right!?!Ed, an 18t would get him don to 66, he would spin out.
I have 48/17 so 76.24, I thind it a good gear, works well all round and not too tricky to stop, especially not with the help of the odd herge or a bit of off roading ;) -

Great ride! Really enjoyed it!
First ride through the English countryside and I look forward to another!
My legs and knees are in good shape today but my shoulders are not happy, if only I had flipped my handlebars earlier on....in fact I may just keep em that way : ) won't make any hipster friends nor will I be very cool...... but I'll be happy!!Thanks for the a great day everyone and Sam thanks for organising the ride.
It was great to meet you all! -
6pt - thanks a lot for the offer.
No need for the bars or lever, so please do not bother anyone with that.
Front brake would be great but the screw would need to be long enough to fit the carbon fork.
I have a lever that I will bring along in case Oli does bring the brake.
If it does not fit I'll carry it in my back pack so it does not weigh anyone down. Thanks again!!

Unfortunately I was unable to find a front brake that fits (the one I had on my steel frame does not fit my new carbon fork, the screw is too short) and didn't get a chance to get down to a bike shop before closing time.
I will keep away from everyone on the big downhills so no need to worry, I won't cause an accident.
I have not had any accidents as an adult on a bicycle yet so fingers crossed I won't have any tomorrow.Spybot - would be great to have the company of another fixed rider, but best you ride whatever you are most comfortable with I guess.
See you all in the morning.

Guys I appreciate the advise, I have actually been meaning to go get a brake put on, its a new bike and sice I had it built I have had no time at all to get it.
Didnt actually realise the grades were so steep, I figured I would just have to slow my feet down as much as I could on the downhills, but if they are too steep + fatigue, it may not be pleasent....I will try to get my hands on a front brake.
I don't wana be a liability so if still no brake by Saturday I will just leave a big gap between myself and the rest of the group on the downhills, but I will try get a brake put on by then.

For those not sure about riding fixed, I had not been on a bike since mid August until almost a month ago but been getting a few miles on my new ride and I don't wana miss out on this ride so I'm comming allong.
Riding fixed on a 48/17, no brake.....worst that will happen is a few days of pain afterwards but I'm excited about the ride.
I did loads of miles over the summer but never that far fixed.
Poots you should come allong, you wont do worst than me!Re train tickets, when I get mine first class was a few quid cheaper than a regular ticket : ) and didnt cost that much!
Glat to hear the ride in on despite the weather.
This looks great!! Hopefully will have the sun out also for this one!
I will be there!
