Sorry James, I knew someone would bite ;)

    Merely a nibble!

I dont think there is time in the program for these things. If you have the patience to watch them doing lap after lap after lap after lap of warmup, then 70 odd laps of racing then you're a better man than most.

It takes about 18 hours, the novelty of seeing pensioners in leather aprons standing up on decrepit, custom motorcycles lasts about 5 minutes and only ever happens once.

I hope you're disappointed then, because motor pacing is a fantastic discipline!

I would not call it a regular feature - the last steher race in Britain having been in 2008. There seems to be quite a lot of interest from people on here whenever this branch of the sport is mentioned. If people want to get involved then they would be more than welcomed by the British Pacing Association.
The authorities have done noise testing with the bikes and they were deemed to fall within an acceptable level, so the noise is not an issue.

Sometimes the stayers come out to play at Herne Hill on Good Friday.

If enough support was shown for steher racing there is no reason it couldn't become a regular feature at Herne Hill!

    What's the cost of sponsorship?

It will cost 1,500 Euros to register with the UCI, plus a couple of hundred £ registration with BC at a guess. That's before you get started.

Well Dicki the Triumphs are only 650cc, but they are surprisingly tough on the legs, paticularly in the bankings, as you are standing up riding them.
The big motors are used indoors, notably at Alkmaar in Holland, Berlin and Dortmund in Germany. Unfortunately none of the indoor tracks in Britain are strong enough to take the weight of the bike, let alone 8 of them thundering around.

No sarcasm Dicki. It really is difficult to find track availability to ride the stayer bikes, but not impossible. If you want to pace on the big motors, you would be welcome to train for your category A pacing licence. You would need to contact the BPA for this.

I don't think Britain has any big motors for stayer racing left now but I believe that it still happens in Germany ... and maybe a few other countries.

Stayer racing is alive in Britain. We have 10 Triumph Thunderbird Motors at Herne Hill. The only problem being that the track is so well supported we have trouble finding the time to get the motors out!

Nice bikes shown here. Do you have any seat braces Hilary?
