Being a London-centric forum this seemed the ideal place to ask about the following; I may well be changing jobs this summer to start working in South Kensington. Any suggestions as regards half-decent, value-for-money locations inisde the M25 boundary that would be a feasible base to regularly commute (bike or public transport, I can't drive) to South Ken from? Inner London is off the menu as I'd like somewhere with straightforward access to rural areas for road and off-road training. Thanks in advance for any comments.

    Hi,

Can someone give me any feedback on my idea to strip my aluminium frame and ride it without any paint or coating?
I've heard differing reports about whether this is a good idea or not. Has anyone done this and do you have any tips? I understand that the surface gets burnished after a while and needs regular polishing. Is that right?
Also, what's the best way of striping the frame?
I could take it to Mario Vaz and get him to do it cheaply, or I could use Nitromors. Is Nitromors ok on an alu frame?

    thanks for any help.

The active ingredient in Nitromors is dichloromethane; it won't react with the Al and is fine for any brazed or welded metal frame. I've used it on steel frames very successfully. Never had an aluminium bike but have used this sort of paint stripper on model trains made of Zn-Al diecast alloys with no ill effects.

Band-on bosses ought to turn up fairly easily via eBay; Shimano "Light Action" 6-speed SIS levers definitely came in band-on format as Dad had some on an old work bike. Probably nothing more modern (poss. 7sp at a pinch??) though unless you acquire some old levers, e.g cheapo Huret ones, and rob the band off them to fit (1) something 8+ speed or (2) STI-style tensioning stops.

Now sorted and no longer on the look-out.

My vehicle is more than 25 years old, therefore I don't have to.

That's food for a splendid counter-argument: if you're pootling around on an old enough bike, wouldn't it be tax-exempt anyroad in the way that classic cars are?

Hilary - did my message re. the Orbit America come through OK? No sign of it in my "Sent Items" folder but definitely interested in the frame if unsold. Otherwise, do you have something of pretty much identical price, spec, condition and size. Frame without fork would be better still as I have a Time carbon one awaiting a frame to fit it to.

    Many thanks,

Disaster - my "new" Reynolds 631 road bike has developed a crack near its BB shell after only 600-odd miles; as it's a second hand purchase from last September I have no real comeback on the item now. As such, I'm looking for a similar-sized steel frame, 57 or 58cm with a 57(ish)cm top tube to do a parts swap and get back on the road soon. Spec sought is roughly as follows:

At least 531c (or equivalent) tubing
    Racing geometry (no guard eyes/clearance)
    2 x water bottle mounts
    British thread BB
    Lugged/fillet brazed construction, not welded
130mm rear end for 8sp hub
Gear lever bosses OR Ergo cable adjusters
Head tube to suit 1-inch headset
    27.2mm seat pillar diameter
    For 700c wheels, not 27"
    Allen key brake bolt fittings

These would also be nice, but not compulsory:

    Vertical dropouts
    Split rear brake cable guides
    Braze-on front mech mount

If you might be able to help, drop me a line. Frame should be free of structural damage with no history of accidents, but would consider a tatty item in need of new paint, especially as I'm on quite a tight budget. Willing to pay P&P costs as appropriate or can collect in person within reasonable travelling distance of Winchester. Preferably looking to buy a frame only as I have a Time carbon fork I can fit to it.

Thanks in advance for any interest,
    David

    Fuck off!

It's a poorly put together peace of shit.

Are you talking about the bike or the Mail? If the latter, couldn't agree more ;)
