You mean we need to ride like we're operating a jackhammer with a stupidly narrow handlebar on a fixie skidder?
i'm not trying to antagonise you but i am not sure what you mean by 'stupidly narrow handlebar on a fixe skidder' maybe i come from a different culture perhaps..but it occurs to me that you may be referring to some type of road traveling MTB with an upright stance, which in turn offends you, ok , or the fashionable cut off (made from drop bars) type straight bars that are more for urban round the block, look cool type thing rather than an extended ride. ...if the latter then i think you hit upon part of my point, i appreciate that riding drop bars is comfy if you have done so for a while, but i also understand that sitting in the brake hoods is an easy (if not comfy) cop out, your not working in that posy much, your enjoying the scenery, if you find your in that posy all the time the cow horns are more comfy. so, having brake hoods on the bars still seems lame, it suggests you are trying to be part a cool fixie dude (but will never be) but cant shake the old road racer habits :)

Have you ever put your hands on the hoods? Did you find it more comfortable? Did give you more leverage when ridding out of the saddle? The actual lever is only one part of the function of drop brakes. I think this is well proven by the constant subtle re-design of the egonomics of drop brakes over the years.
Aethetics aside, I find it hard to belive that anyone riding drops doesn't find having 2 levers more comfortable.
wish i could see it your way, but, even after trying, nah, its just lame, if you dont have/want brakes then find a suitable bar thats comfortable (but if your stuck with the attitude of riding a roady, its hard habit to change), if you want the levers then add the brake, they come in handy after all, in the case of the Vanilla bike it just looks stupid to not have the rear brake but still the lever, somewhere to sit your hands when your cruising i appreciate, but hmm, just kinda strange to me..weight maybe, its not going to hurt the commuter bike? IMO it still looks stupid, get rid of the mudgaurds etc etc to save if ness....

I know it's your opinion, (and I'm partly taking issue because it's the setup I have), but I struggle to see how 2 levers and no rear brake looks ridiculous. Plenty of bikes run the rear cable on the left, so it's only the rear caliper you're missing...and I just can't imagine it standing out that much.
fwiw I also like single levers, only really on old skool bikes (pre-70s or so), and with non-aero cable routing...and preferably gum/tan hoods.
...and...
...well because usually when people ride fixed, they loose the rear brake. Which you well know.
i guess i am missing something, because if a lever is there, hanging off the bar, doing sweet FA , nothing, (as in that pic of the Vanilla bike seems to show[?]) , then it just looks stupid and lame doesnt it?..now if it only looked stupid, ok, if it only looked lame, ok, but both!!

i signed up partly because of this thread ,i have thoughaly enjoyed, been looking and working my way through it for days now and its still great, so far...there is for sure some sexy looking machines on here! but i dont know how this old girl can be attract any unlawful criticism , she was built in 1910 as far as i know, that should cut her some slack eh (you should look so good 100 years later!), the double truss bar was considered a pretty nice feature (strong too) compared to other makers with plain straight double bars, and still looks good now i reckon, the double chain stays look cool, the extra seat stay doesnt look so cool (it wasn't on their other models) but its there for a purpose, to strengthen, the other side doesnt have any stays at all, designed for a purpose , so the tyre can be changed in a road race quickly, quicker than everyone else at least! the front fork is a lefty fork for the same reason, so it can be changed out in the tour de france or similar race i presume (its a french 1910 bike)
i reckon this bike has real charm and style, not as pure sexy as we are used to seeing in 2010, but in 1910...WOW
yeah, sure, its not me,... but i get a kick out of seeing them i wouldnt advise that type of thing, but in todays world.....
actually it reminds me of when i about 10 years old and crossed the road without looking, the driver that went sideways yelled all manner of abuse at me that i have never forgotten!!!
