Hi John. I'm also new to the forum. Before condemning the bottom bracket make sure the noise isn't originating in one of the pedals. It's not too uncommon that this be the case. The noise usually occurs at the same position of the pedal stroke. Bottom bracket problems usually involve worn and therefore rough bearings. A test for this I have heard (though haven't had occasion to try) is to disconnect the chain from the chainring and spin the crank. If the bearings are worn and rough you should be able to feel and here that through the frame. Hope this helps a little. Take care
Good idea on the headset. There are some good instructional videos on youtube. One called "bicycle tutor" comes to mind. There are several on different types of bottom bracket installation. In general, grease your threads and don't overtighten fasteners. It's not as hard as it might seem the first time. Work slowly and use common sense. Good luck. Cheers
