I've been riding a suicide fixed for 18 months now. London traffic, 12 mile commute and I don't go slow. I do have front and rear brakes and I don't try to skid stop. I used a lockring, a good strong tool and made sure the threads were nice and clean. Never enver had a problem and I do check it.
Maybe it's the gearing (48:17 on 700c wheels). Maybe it's the hub quality (Suntour Superbe Pro). Probably it's the lockring (Raleigh 24 TPI from an old cottered BB).
Sheldon reckons they're fine if done properly. I've yet to find a good reason to disagree with him on this or anything else.

The crank isn't that oldfashioned as it's cotterless. So that means it's most likely ISO (English) or Italian. From the outside, dead easy to tell if you accurately measure the shell (frame part the BB sits in). Italian is 70mm, ISO is 68mm or 73mm.
If ISO the left hand side will be left hand threaded. If Italian, both sides will be standard right hand threaded.
Highly unlikely to be any other type as they are all too old. If you want more info, read Sheldon:

Very good tip that was given to me when my seat post get stuck (well cut, from some light fingered t**t) insert a quill stem if you can, tighten up (make sure you have handlebars attached still) and twist to feck :) worked for me and i had 5mm of tupe left sticking out of mine.

/attachments/28629Frame is an old Dawes (identified by the remnant head badge) but it's been painted in Hammerite so I have no further info. Any suggestions welcome (it's apparently Reynolds 531, and it's not too heavy at about 7lb frame, forks and seatpost).
The wraparound seat tube seems distinctive - anyone got an idea of what model it might be?

My 11 year old daughter's 3/4 sized road bike stolen 30 March outside local Tesco's in Ham TW10. She worked with me aged 9 to rebuild this bike from end to end, naturally she is devastated at its loss. Yes it was reported to the local cops and now the Cycle Task Force.
Detailed description:
Apollo steel frame (late 1980's vintage) in original blue with a few scratches - for an older child. This is not a full sized road bike, more about 3/4 size (it actually started life as a very early 24" kids MTB but with thin steel tubing so more like a road bike)
ITM alloy drop handlebars in an alloy 1" threaded road style stem with shiny blue bar tape. Shimano indexed road shifter/brake lever assembly.
Gears: Shimano Sora front and rear.
Wheels: 26" (559) Mavic black rims (XM317 I think) with blue anodised spoke nipples, silver spokes laced to Campagnolo alloy hubs. These wheels are very distinctive having been handbuilt by me. Tyres: narrow "Bronx" black road tyres, showing some cracking in the surface.
Brakes: Miche alloy dual pivot road brakes. The rear brake is mounted on a modified hanger (as described by Sheldon) to reach the rim correctly. You can see the old canti bosses just below on the rear (not yet cut off, I did the front ones.)
Cranks: Black SR Suntour with blue translucent plastic pedals. The bolts holding the cranks on have anodised blue washers.
Gear and brake cables - blue housing, again very distinctive. The cable ends are also anodised blue.
Saddle: Dark blue (not the one in the photo) with blue flame motif.
