Have been using Forward Components EBB without any problems since Oct 09 with a Shimano 105 triple crankset on a Trek 7.9FX hybrid converted to singlespeed, though had to file about 3mm off the inside edge of all the granny ring mounts because of the larger diameter of the EBB over standard BB cups.
If you use a road double crankset no modifications should be required.
I have also just ordered another for an old 90's Orange MTB which I have converted to singlespeed.
IMO when cycling SS if you can find a gear that you are happy for the uphills at a low cadence out of the saddle and enjoy the great workout its giving you, and enjoy freewheeling on the downhills, then you should never really need to change the gearing/chain length.
So using the FC EBB to convert a vertical dropout frame with quick release seems a more sensible option than buying an eccentric hub or frame with horizontal dropouts as you still have the issues of wheel position / chain tension / brake position every time you get a flat.
If you do need to move the EBB to change the chainstay length to take up chain wear its not a big chore, but since the KMC Z610HX chains I use don't cost more than 3-4 coffees and chain stretch also wears the rings/sprockets, I prefer to fit a new chain.
