if you just want a single speed you can keep your existing rim, just go to a bike shop and get them to take off your old freewheel, buy a new singlespeed freewheel (£7-10), take a few links out of your chain so it fits and your done!
worked great on my 89 carbolite and saved me a lot of money, chain allignment isnt perfect but its close enough, and the existing chain is made for derailleurs anyway so it'll have a bit of flex and still work and not come off
