Since buying this for £90 on Ebay a couple of weeks ago, it's had a full service, new brake and gear cables with black casing replacing the white. New white Fizik bar tape, Michelin Dynamics gum wall tyres (panaracers were recommended, but more expensive and harder to get hold of so these will do for now) and a borrowed brooks saddle which will be replaced with a San Marco concor light or turbo in due course ( opinions on either and whether to get a tan or white or black saddle welcome)

This has been built up for some time now, but never posted it in this thread before, so here you go...

That actually look well specced despite being a run-of-the-mill frame.
Panaracer Pasela in 25c (or 28c).
Cheers for the tyre recommendation. To be fair, it doesn't weigh too much, and although i've had a quick search on the web, I can't find any details regarding the original spec of the bike. I suspect the wheels have been upgraded though. It has some nice touches too, like the cable routing through the frame and fluted seat post. Also, it has elliptical shaped Biopace chain rings, which I guess were a fad at the time to improve efficiency??

Just picked up this Raleigh Elan on Ebay for £90 as a cheap run about / pub bike. Think it's dates to around 1990 - 1992. Reynolds 501 tubing, mostly Shimano Exage / 105 components, and Mavic Open 4CD anodized rims.
The Vittoria tyres and tubes need replacing, as does the bar tape and hoods, but considering it's 20 years old, it's in pretty good condition. Not sure whether to change the bar tape colour and saddle. Any opinions on suitable replacements welcome...
Also, recommendations on decent gum wall tyres would be appreciated. Cheers.

I deliberated a lot over the colour, but I'm glad I stuck with it! The wheels are NOS Campagnolo Omega's laced to 2010 Campagnolo pista hubs. Tyres are Conti gatorskins.
