It wasn't originaly meant to be used as a fixed gear, Charlie built it as a TT bike, to get a rear triangle that was nice and close clearance wise he would braze a short track end on instead of drop out. It works because you have the same length steel chain stay as any other road bike which makes it a bit more forgiving but you have the wheel further forward to let you put the power down.
