how is a head tube a small part?
Even more so, why was it taken to an alu welder? Crazy.
And secondly, why did he not contact Brompton after it happened?
Head tube is a small part in size that can also be replaced. Not a reference to importance.
I have spoken with him again and I misunderstood what he meant. He took it to someone who did some aluminium welding for him on another job, hence why he told me he had sent it to the aluminium welder.
Brompton have said they can't help unless he buys a new frame off them so taking it to the welder first made no difference.
I think the answer is, he will need to take it to a frame builder to build a custom part.

Has anyone had any problems with the head tube of their Brompton. My dad managed to get a serious crack in the head tube on his. He took it to an alu welder who welded the crack. My dad wasn't fully happy with the work so he brazed a steel band around this to help support it. Sadly its gone again.
After speaking with Brompton he said they will do a full service for £280 however the part that he needs work done to is an old design which they don't stock and so they would have to move all his parts over onto a new frame. This seems daft for such a small part.
Does anyone know of a place that might be good for spares or would it be a case of keeping an eye out someone breaking a frame? I can't believe it will be a write off for having to replace such a small part.
Any help?

Maybe I'm a little naive but I wouldn't call that a write off. The seat tube is going to take downward force mostly so I wouldnt expect it to split randomly.
I have seen in the mechanics section, whenever people find cracks, ripples on the downtube by the headseat etc, the advice given is usually 'get rid of it' rather than 'this is how I would fix it'.
In my life I've had a seatpost snap on me which I knew was coming as it was slowly bending towards the back wheel and when it did go, I could see the fault in the casting process.
Have people had catastrophic splits in frames from damaged frames whilst riding, or is it just pre-empting the end and saving themselves any inevitable injury by paying the few hundred quid for a replacement frame?
