My Mum works as the head of a chaplaincy team for a large psychiatric hospital in london. I've been in to run errands for her a few times over the last decade that she's been working there, and we often talk about mental health care issues. Often it's about the stigma attached.
Debates or conversations surrounding mental illness are always characterized by a lack of good, evidence based information. It's so sad particularly because mental illness is so common. All of us know someone who is suffering some form of mental illness, or has done- or it may be us. So why is it so mysterious?
On a forum where we justifiably portray ourselves as vulnerable cyclists who are on occasion victimized by aggressive motorists, if we just empathise with some of the most vulnerable people around us that'd be a good start.

The 25 yr old Highland Park is the finest I've had the pleasure of, particularly because it is so smooth. Lagavulin is my usual favourite, and I'm with Velocio on a lovely peaty malt but the Highland Park 25 is a lovely change. Not cheap mind, but worth every penny in my humble opinion.

I thought Vicky was great. Brendan O'Neill was right I suppose when he said that attempting to legislate against any form of speech becomes an attack on liberty, but I don't think that he made a serious attempt at empathy at all, which must be part of this issue.
When my wife was shouted at recently from a car (which slowed down in order to do it) by a couple of men recently on the way home from the station near our house it really shook her up. After dark now she'll take a bus in between the two, instead of what should be a pleasant 10 minute walk along a well lit big suburban road. Watching her weigh up the options, worrying about the what might happen/might not happen is difficult. That's the bit that makes me upset about it on her behalf, the feeling vulnerable after the event not just the event itself.
To describe a campaign to discuss this issue as promoting fear by mapping the locations of incidents was uncalled for. I don't think he was listening enough to the experiences of women who are upset by this- that has to change in a debate like that one if it's to change at large. Legislating might well be fraught with difficulty and ultimately un-doable, but listening sensitively is not.

Seeing as it's on the subject, tomorrow morning on Woman's Hour on good old radio 4 there's a discussion on street harassment and how women respond to being shouted at. Don't know whether that will have anything useful to add, but thought I'd flag it in case anyone's interested

There's a march happening on March 26th where we can demonstrate our opposition to what's going on on our side of the pond, namely the ill thought out and grossly unfair massive cuts to public services we're being faced with. Anyone coming to that?
