Well I've got some Aliums so no adjustment anyway.
I've flipped the wheel round & will be venturing out for the first go at fixed fairly soon. Ah working from home ;-)
The main worry I have is the unclipping with the pedals still spinning, any tips on the knack for this?
I went out last night SS, first time with the cleats on this bike & the saddle a bit lower. Felt SO much better than the straps that came with the Lankster. Almost no bouncing in the seat as well, perhaps due to being in Portsmouth rather than struggling up the Yorkshire hills. Or a combination of better saddle height/clips & thinking more about pedalling.
I'll let you know if I've fallen off very soon.
Update:
Went for a very quick bumble round the block. Good things: Did not use my face to stop with, managed to unclip without falling off.
Bad things: Am tragically pleased that I didn't fall off, even the few minutes fixed were fun.
Other bad thing: I have to do some work now & not feck around on the bike.

Don't talk to him Murtle . You'll only encourage his continued postings.
This forum should be about one off sales attempts and questions about OTP and what colour. We'll have no free thinkers here!
Which is better PlugsterFujiPistaLeBowery?
Should I go brakeless on my freewheel, but only if my shoes match the frame?
Better? Or should I just feck off back to avoiding work in some other way...

I missed out SS roadbikes and went straight to fixed. Never looked back.
Anything I should be aware of with the starting/stopping aspect?
I have already (a few years ago) done the failed to unclip, oh bollocks I'm lying in the road thing. I'm a bit concerned that not being able to freewheel will result in pedal mashing shins issues.

Hard to say, but shouldn't really take too long - but you should be riding a gear that allows a cadence of 90 - 100, say 42-18 something around there.
I don't think being lanky or unfit should make a diff. You will get fit, and as long as you have your pedals and cleats (if you have them) adjusted correctly, your height should not a difference.
I've got some pedals & cleat to put on when I get back home. I may try fixed somewhere quiet at the weekend.
Only ridden near the hotel I stay in for work, near Leeds: hilly as feck. Should be easier back home,Portsmouth: flat.
So fixed sooner rather than later? I seem to remember reading something on Sheldon Brown about starting fixed being better that starting SS?

Apologies in advance for the newb post. Been lurking a while & have recently got meself a SS.
Tis a Langster - based on a deal I got from the bike shop. Though searching the old threads on here did help ;-). I'm sticking with SS for a while before I go fixed.
Assuming the bike is set up ok how long do you reckon it would take to develop a reasonably proper pedaling technique? Being a lanky unfit IT geek doesn't help.
I shall await my flaming now...

Cheers for the replies guys
Skeleton - Thank you for the rough estimate, I'll bear that in mind
Sharkstar - Thank you for the offer mate, but as I'm not london based (Portsmouth) and also I've discovered the front wheel needs re-truing, so from a time point of view, just gonna cough up at the LBS on Monday.
Also,
Are there any fixed riders in Portsmouth out there? (Hello?)
I spotted a plug once but it was SS, as was a home conversion.
I did see a Pompino once, but as it was being pushed rather than ridden, I think it was more of a fashion accessory than a bike.So was it an Aqua cab that you head-butted?
I'm in Pompey, in the process of getting my first fixed (been lurking here for a while). My weekly commute to Leeds is putting a bit of a spanner in that plan tho.
Ah the Dickens. Haven't been there since I used to work around the corner. Many a Friday lunchtime turned into a Friday evening in the warm embrace of the selection of real ales....
Now if only I wasn't at Heathrow airport at the moment!
Cheers!
