Yo - found this shitty Dawes frame in a garage and started trying to make it ride-able this easter...
Nitromors back to metal - nasty hammerite blue can job. New headset , New stem, new riser bars - old dia compe BMX brakes - existing front brake fixed. Existing stronglight crank with a new stronglight 50 wheel. 18t Spacer kit on the back, new chain. Waiting on some chunky grips to make up for my nasty choice of blue risers and a new back brake. 100 notes spent so far. y

Hey
Please forgive my ignorance, im a rookie bike builder and was after some advice. I recently found an old Dawes Racing bike in my grannies garage, Ive been sick and tired of the gears on my current bike fucking up on the way to work so though i'd embark on a bit of SS rebuilding. Ive started stripping the bike down and Im tryin to do it on the cheap so i've got a few questions... i've been reading alot of the posts on here for tips and im also following that Bob guy's video slideshow on restoring an old racer....
I know the best thing to do is armourtex the frame but could i get a good result with Nitromors and spraying it maybe with something like hammerite or carspray!?
The drivetrain is a wreck - as is most of the bike, could i use parts off my old Redline 440 BMX and get a decent setup - would the chain/ fit etc ?
This Bob guy does alot of measuring and fliping things..he flips the axel through the BB to get the chain ring closer to the frame then he flips the rear wheel axel, puts spacers to line up the chainring and gear then he re-dishes the wheel. Some other places suggest you can just put spacers on to line up the chain - What do you guys reckon the best way to do it all is ? Also if it is poss to use my BMX stuff should i use the free hub off that - the existing hub has a cassette on it but seems to move ok?
any advice much appreciated
Cheers
A crappy dawes i found a while back which needed serious work to make rideable - never done any bike work before so an enjoyable learning curve. Planning a first ride tonight if the rain holds off - running a 50-18 ratio which may be a disaster on the ride back up the Holloway rd! Hammerite blue, wobbly riggida rims, hipster grips and poor braking...
