1993 Mercian Pro Lugless Fillet Brazed 531c Bike

  • 1993 Mercian Pro Lugless Fillet Brazed 531c Bike for sale. It is a stunner, which I got from the original owner. Unfortunately the TT is touch too short for me and I am going away for a few months, otherwise I'd be keeping it. Please excuse the angle of the seat in the pics.

S/T is 62cm, TT is 57.5cm as I measure it.
    Looking at the original build sheet, S/T is 24 & 3/4"" (63cm) , TT is 22 & 3/4 "" (57.8cm).

This would have been built for audax and light touring and the original owner who I met was very fond of it over a 30 year period. Mechanically it is in great condition. Cosmetically it is in even better condition - the frame is immaculate. Rear spacing is 130mm so this could easily take a modern groupset (your prerogative, but don't do that!!).

Wheels: Mavic MA2 rims on Shimano Deore DX hubs.
    Headset: Deore
Drive train: Shimano Deore & Deore DX, 105 shifters. 7*3.
    Brakes & levers: Shimano 105
    Colour: "Deep Plum Pearl"
Other: comes with its original paperwork, 3ttt stem, Modolo bars, some spare calipers & brake pads, old chainrings.

You can still buy this frameset (albeit different tubing) today.

£495 collected from Bristol. It could be taken to Derby too in around 2 weeks. Stack of pics here and will add some to the thread itself.

  • Damn, sub £300 in 1993, nice to see the original paperwork like that. glws.

  • What a beauty shame it’s too big for me.

    GLWS

  • Nice, how long is the head tube between the cups?
I thought Mercian had shut down/ gone bust?

  • 18.5-19cm

And yeah they did briefly go into administration about a year ago. My understanding is they were bought/saved and then most of the existing staff and builders working there just started again with the new owners business as usual

  • Yep they’re certainly back in business; had a Mercian restored and repainted by them in November. Amazing work. This bike looks incredible glws

  • Lovely, the Pro lugless was their most expensive model at the time. I have a 26" wheel tourer version (converted to 650B) that rides really nicely. GLWS.

  • It's still Mercian in name and people but run by a newco and new directors. The old company was dissolved.
