Hub spacing measurement

Posted on
  • Hello! I have a steel frame and measure the spacing without wheel, and it is 131.5mm.

Any experience if I should go 130mm or 135mm?

    Thank you in advance!

  • Steel frames can flex a bit, so you might be able to go for either. If you let us know what the frame is somebody might be able to say what the spacing was originally.

  • Yes, I confirm both fits, had both in it.

But now building a nice wheel, no I want to order the right size.

Frame is a Schauff Libero, nothing really known. A defunct German company making race bike to trekking bike. Bike is sort of an hybrid, what would be called fitness nowadays. So can be either way, 130 or 135mm.

  • It really doesn’t matter, space it to whatever hub you currently have or whichever you want to buy.

Edit: I see you were actually asking what hub to buy, not what to space it to. You’ll have an easier time getting the 130 hub in the space than the 135, so you if don’t want to re-space the dropouts, go for that. Just check the hub is central in relation to the seat and chain stays when you tighten it up.

And maybe check the alignment of the frame anyway, it may have taken a knock on one side which has taken it from 135 to 131

  • I actually just order a new one, so can go either way, but yes once the wheel is built, you cannot add a 5mm spacer because it won't be centered anymore!

And yes tempted by the 130mm. The 135mm needed a lot of tension on quick release to actually don't move. So 130mm might be the one.

  • Are those mudguards plastic or anodised metal?

  • Plastic with some alu to re-inforced, old sks olympic bluemels found in shop parts bin. They have conductive inserts for lights.

    some in Ukraine: https://prom.ua/ua/p1787569338-novi-krila-dlya.html

  • If it was me, I'd definitely respace it to 135; the odd measurement it currently has would make me worry the frame isn't straight for one, and for two, less dish on your wheel makes it stronger. Thirdly, it looks like maybe you're running a triple, which 135 would suit better.

  • Actually all the hub I am looking at at similar in 130 and 135. Only the axle has different ends.

May I ask the impact having a triple?
