Black and White / Monochrome

  • I know some people on here shoot a lot of black and white but not sure if it requires its own thread or not. I feel like it’s a different enough medium that it could be interesting to have a dedicated place for it. Often a monochrome image works in ways that a colour image wouldn’t, and vice-versa.

  • I really like the contrast of black and white photos, I'd love one of those Leica Monochroms if I won the lottery....

I'd be very interested in seeings peoples B&W specific photos.

I really really considered a monochrom when I bought my 240.

I have ended up using it for shooting stuff that needs colour though so I’m kind of glad that I didn’t.

I set the film mode to black and white so get b&w previews, I keep thinking I should maybe shoot jpeg so that my images are b&w as soon as I import them to the computer.

  • I very seldom shoot for black and white specifically. Sometimes it’s just a whim in post but on the occasion I’ve gone and deliberately done it, it’s changed how I look at forms etc.

Recent ish ones from a shoot in Cheddar:

  • It’s not in focus but still pleased with it.
Straight out of camera, no edit.

  • All bangers, too.

  • Thank you very much!

  • More contrast? I think I like really clearly black and clearly white photos like those Cheddar Gorge ones above.

  • I got into IR photography a while back with a filter.
Stopped as it was cumbersome to take a tripod and calculate exposures as it is quite a hefty few stops it adds on.

Looking into converted cameras so I can point and shoot a little more, anyone had any experience?

I have an old D40 I could get converted but IIRC it is not an ideal candidate for conversion.

Might check eBay for someone selling one.

  • little play in the garden with the monochrome filter i never knew i had.

  • Seen quite a few converted Canons. Looks quite cool for a B&W only camera in one way or another.

  • Been playing around with in-camera jpeg settings. Liking this look, bit higher contrast than I’d normally roll with.

  • Thornham point, just down the road from me. Nice little marina there.

  • I have had a couple of converted cameras and it makes it a lot easier, needless to say. The first was a canon 20d with the IR filter removed. The one I have now is a Panasonic lumix and had that converted by a company that does conversions and adjust the sensor etc. as the canon was a diy job it threw out the focus quite wildly and wouldn’t focus to infinity.

I bought the Panasonic in 2016. It’s a full spectrum conversion, so you can use numerous colour and IR filters on the lens or even a filter to take it back to a standard camera with UV and IR filtered out.

If going dslr I would go full spectrum, if a pocket camera then get a set IR filter of your choice, since you can’t really add filters to them.

I would ideally choose a full sensor camera to convert but it’s costly on lenses and filters potentially.

I went with a micro four thirds camera as I use an elaborate home brew lens set up and the particular camera was good for video at the time.

Examples of photos from the Panasonic in monochrome and the canon one is the colour image.
