• So a while back mid May last year I bought a Cannondale CAAD2 Saeco Red Cipollini style bike, it was shod with awesome vintage Zipp 808's and setup for time trial. This was basically my dream bike which I slowly upgraded with 11sp Sram Force 22 and slammed stem and blacked out

Looks like this, frame currently for sale here https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/384554/newest/

However slowly as things go, I learnt more and more about the CAAD frames and realised all the differences between all the generations, this even involved grabbing an older pre-CAAD SR500 from the forum. I realised that I wanted something with a lighter frame and a bit of more racy geometry. The CAAD2 is the slightly more relaxed frame with the CAAD3 being lighter and more racy. The CAAD2 I bought is not exactly heavy, but not super light either at about 1.59kg frame only. The CAAD3 is supposedly lighter by a bit and the later ones generally tend to be lighter

Lo and behold I saw a CAAD5 on eBay for sale, and couldn't resist! The CAAD5s are a bit of a sweet spot, they have a 1-1/8" threadless integrated headset, but still have a standard English threaded BB (before the dreaded press fit stuff). They have the hourglass seat stays and an enlarged downtube particularly around the BB. Also the geometry of this frame is a horizontal top tube with a much shorter head tube to get the front really low.

It was in my size which is 52cm top tube which is not super common. I'm not particularly short at 1.72m but am somewhat between sizes and having had a proper bike fit it was recommended a 52cm top tube would be ideal to get a good fit with saddle setback and normal stem length. So last weekend I travelled all the way up from London to Middlesbrough to pick it up.

This is how it looked on pickup. It was from its original owner, also a smaller guy but quite a bit smaller than me as you can tell by the stem. He was the original owner and the serial No dates it to 2005. Came with a 105 5500 9sp groups with Ultegra cranks and Shimano WH-R550 wheels

So got this bad boy home after spending all day getting up to Middlesbrough and back... took all day more or less but still worth it as this bike was seriously pristine. The red CAAD2 was in near new condition with only slight paint bubbles. This one had almost none of that with only a tiny patch near one of the cable stops. Otherwise the paint was beautiful, on disassembly even the grease in all the parts was still coloured and not blackened! Looked like it had an easy life and the previous owner told me it was kept indoors the whole time and barely used which was why it was being sold.

  • So onto disassembly, the plan was to do a more or less straight swap of the components onto this frame and then sell off the parts to pay for it. On disassembly this is how clean some of the parts were... nuts!

And the weigh in... part of the reason I went for this frame... Damn light at 1.22kg Not too far off a carbon frame except his frame is nearly 20 years old!. Fork is not that light due to being alloy steerer but can be a future upgrade.

Super happy with this frame as it's in immaculate condition and has a really nice metallic finish which you can just see. To be continued...

  • Wow great catch!

The steerer looks like you git it from factory.

I love this decent colorway with the little blue accents. Also love the little improvements a CAAD5 has over the previous models

Looking forward to your part swap

  • PS re forks I suggest to look out for one of the caad 7 ones as attached. I think they fit (technically) and they should also match the frame (aesthetically) well

Maybe when they come with a damaged frame (had one in summer but sold em) or a cheap complete bike with shite colorway and components to resell

Since you do not need a long steerer, chances to find something should not be too bad

  • Always been a fan of that grey colour

  • Yep nice frame. I think that frameset would actually look better with matching coloured forks, in which case you could get a ‘normal’ old caad fork v cheap no doubt and have it painted. Just an idea..

  • Very nice, can already tell this is going to be a good'un. Those CAAD5 forks are lighter than i remember and suit the frame well. Not sure i'd bother swapping for 150g but i do think the SI forks have better clearance if the back will take a 28c?

  • Thanks for the tip, will keep my eye out. I assume after the CAAD7 they went to a tapered fork?

  • No not until CAAD10, 8 & 9 still straight steerer

  • Yeah to be honest when I weighed it I thought this too, it’s not on the top of my priority list. The forks I have already look great, I do like the look of the early 2000’s stuff when Carbon was still somewhat exotic so exposed carbon finishes were more fashionable. My guess is these forks def fit a 25mm not sure about 28mm but it might be a maybe. This might be a factor to nudge me to replace the fork at some point down the track

  • Not the same forks but my slice premiums on my 2005/06 Six13 comfortably fit 28s.

  • You have a Six/13? I just looked at your profile and saw your pic… Jealous! Beautiful bike… do you have a project thread?

  • I do indeed! Not got a project thread for it but I’ve posted it enough times in the cannondale thread that I don’t feel like I can spam the forum anymore..

Don’t actually have a decent pic of it in its current guise, but a couple of older pics here. Now has different stem post and saddle and will shortly have different cranks too…

  • Just took it out for its first ride today, and took some pics after washing it

  • Looks fkn fast 🥵🥵🥵

I feel like full carbon rims would be a great improvement tho. The silver brake flanks somehow mismatch the greyish colorway. And/or maybe its the white decals, not entirely sure.

  • Great looking bike maybe there is too much going on colourwise on the wheels

  • Yeah I tend to agree about the busyness, although the wheels and frame are both from mid 2000’s so I guess bikes back then used to be a bit more garish! Same with the alloy brake tracks, I had them completely destickered once but they look kinda odd with the silver ring around them.

In any case, the bike/wheels feel super fast… Just rode it up to Cambridge on Sunday and did my fastest avg speed ever, the front end on this bike sits really low and was easily cruising along at 30-40kmh . Although nearly crashed once because a strong crosswind gust pushed the front wheel which was pretty scary.

Long term I will probably build a new set of carbon clincher wheels. Several reasons, these Zipps are pretty heavy due to the alloy track, quite narrow and not tubeless compatible of course. New build will probably do a 55mm deep rim which will handle the wind better, tubeless and wide.

And more importantly will probably do it either all blacked out spokes/hubs, or in a homage to Zipp, polished spokes/hub with black carbon rims. Although polished/silver hubs have less choice.

  • Personally think it looks great. No idea when they were launched but those wheels at least look like they should gain you membership to one of my favourite clubs

  • Haha thanks for the support. I dated them from the decals they came with and the hub type to about 2007. Frame is 2005 from what I gather on the serial. Will check out the thread cheers!

  • A few minor updates...
Changed the stock FSA headset for a low stack Ritchey one, also swapped in a -17deg stem to get the front end low as possible. There is about 12.5cm of saddle drop :D

  • Oh and these turned up on my doorstep

Still waiting for the rims to arrive... but can't wait!

  • I hope the rims will be shallow, I'm not a big fan of the deep rims on this.

  • Haha, not to fear. I ordered 56mm carbon clinchers, Not exactly shallow but much less than the 808's. Part of the reason was really safety as the 808's just catch the wind like anything

  • Rims are here, ordered the Light Bicycle AR56 with graphene brake tracks and a few sets of pads. The rims are drilled for 20/24, however as a slight twist the rear will be built as a 2:1 lacing, so 16h on DS and 8h on NDS. Rim has been purposely drilled for this

Also got a pair of these…
