Mastodon is the open source code that Trump stole for Truth Social I think.
It's a really interesting platform. I've not dabbled with federated social networks before but it's going to be really interesting to see if it takes hold and whether the model will survive the various content moderation challenges

I'm newly there. Chose quite a niche server so the local timeline will in normal circumstances be very focused and the federated timelines will depend a lot on my neighbours. In normal circumstances, that is; currently I think every timelines everywhere I'd dominated by three things:
- I'm new here and I hate Musk.
- We told you all years ago that Twitter is shit and now here you arrive, proving our point. We were right and you were wrong.
- Could y'all shut up about Twitter and Musk?
Now I just have to go find all the people I was following on Twitte , while avoiding contributing to the above noise.
- I'm new here and I hate Musk.

Any thoughts on this?

This will always be a risk in a federated network. You need to find reasons to trust the node you join (I know some of the people running the one I chose) and you should arm yourself with malware defence - both of which also applied to old Twitter and even more so in Musk-owned Twitter because there's already evidence he's abusing it.
Most of the comments on that tweet are depressing in their ignorance. They blindly went in one direction and are now blindly fleeing in others.

For newbies like me, this might help with finding people to follow

This is a useful way to find instances https://instances.social/

I signed up to mastodon in the summer, but didn’t really take it too far. I binned my Twitter acct, FB is only residual for selling crap, IG is private for friends and family only. I’m trying to be done with the socials unless mastodon gets funny.

Prediction: Whether related to Mastodon or Twitter, I think there is about to be an online debate about decentralised autononmous organisations and blockchain as a potential solution to the moderation problem.

Will be? There already has been, more than once. Will it be remotely sane this time?

Does it matter which server you join to start so I can move when the lfgss one gets set up?
You know I should just read the guide.....

After you join, you can migrate your account to any instance that will have you. You can also have separate accounts on different instances - some people use clients that make it easy to switch between them or even have a combined view of them.
Your choice of server has no effect on your home timeline (only containing the content from people you follow), makes a huge difference to the local timeline (what people on the instance are posting), makes a nuanced difference to your federated timeline (complicated but who your neighbours follow and how your instance is linked to the rest plays a part).
Of course, if you join a less populated instance then finding people to follow is slightly more work.
Each instance also has its own individual stance on moderation and on which Mastodon features are enabled, where optional, or configured, where flexible. Mostly the configuration differences are minor ones around the web interface.

LFGSStodon. Thank me for that later.
But please don’t all go posting there instead and kill the forum…

I liked Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye, but don't revisit very much.
Maybe I will today. -

We all know Mastodon Sentries were the baddies right? If it turns out Lord Drakkon is behind this everyone who’s signed up is going to feel pretty silly.

Who is on there then?

Heehee. Good lad

My Twitter a/c got locked ages ago after posting an altercation with an absolute bastard of a coach driver. Have dabbled in Mastodon (home instance mastodon.social—from 2017)—mostly pictures of a local block of flats.

Tusky is miles better than the stock Android app, which is simply missing a lot of features and has a terrible UI. It also has a cleaner UI than the web app.

mastodon.social and mastodon.online are slowly being isolated as a growing number of instances are (or are planning to) defederating from them. Their moderation hasn't scaled up to match the influx; trolls of various kinds are registering there, using it as a base for attacking people and, when they are eventually kicked out, just creating a new account knowing that the moderation is too busy to spot them.

Yeah, I am aware I need to move.
Edit: have since moved

Mastodon is where I heard about the Saudi Arabia vs Argentina result, so I guess I'm there now.
Meanwhile...

Am beginning to experiment with Mastodon given concerns that Twitter is going to degrade as an information source. Interested in any Mastodon servers that people are following that they'd recommend.
Probably worth adding what server is good for so people can make a quick judgement on whether it's there thing or not
