  • Came past this last night at about 7pm, horrible to see the helmet and bike in the road/on the pathway. Road still closed at 11pm on the way back through.

Best wishes for recovery for the cyclist

  • It has now finally been reported that the victim in this crash is Ben Gregory, the Welsh decathlete. The initial articles specifically about him didn't give any information about the crash except that it was in London. Here's the Islington Tribune article:

    https://www.islingtontribune.co.uk/article/athlete-left-fighting-for-life-after-road-collision

It's not a very well-written article (some of the usual problems around reporting crashes occur in it) and still doesn't give any information how the crash happened. As someone who cycles along this stretch all the time, I have a suspicion as to what it may have been, but I won't speculate here.

The suggestion that other people in his place would have died is very worrying, and there is obviously no telling whether he will pull through. All best wishes to him and those close to him.

  • Updates on his condition. Tough reading.

Additional information that only seems to be in the red-tops so far:

Heffernan has now been able to provide a more positive update, with the athlete able to begin the process of coming out of his coma. However, she's also warned that Gregory, 31, will have "no memory" of his family and will have to "learn how to move again, obey commands, re-learn how to think and how to talk and walk."

She said on Instagram "The doctors said we are now out of the storm but what has seemed like the hardest two weeks of our lives are about to get harder. But I'm certain of this, Ben would never want us to doubt him, ever."

And Heffernan seemed under no illusions about the difficult journey which lies ahead: "This is going to the hardest thing he's ever had to go through. Me too," she continued.

"But with his incredible army behind him and Ben's love for life and his drive I know he's going to defy all the odds, he's going to surprise every doctor and nurse and he's going to get through this in a way that they've never seen before.

And hearteningly, she pledged her husband-to-be would return a better version of himself, concluding her post with "Ben will never be the Ben you once knew but he will be an even better version, Ben 2.0 with even more strength and light than any of us can imagine."

  • An update from a week ago, perhaps cause for cautious optimism:

Decathlete Ben Gregory is no longer in a critical condition after being involved in a serious bike crash in August.

  • I missed this in December. It sounds as if at least initially he will be using a wheelchair upon being discharged. I hope his rehabilitation continues beyond that. No doubt being an extremely fit elite athlete helped him survive the crash.

As the article is silent about it, I assume there hasn't been any progress on finding the driver responsible.
