Mid-Range Alternatives to the SRAM GXP?

Posted on
  • What it says in the title really. Have now gone through 2 GXP bottom brackets within 1.5k miles of use collectively. I know it has a poor reputation and ideally I'd like to avoid a like-for-like replacement if I can help it. I know Hope make one that is directly compatible but that's a little beyond the budget atm - I was wondering if anyone has any experience with a mid-range alternative (say...around the £50 mark?) that could be swapped for use with SRAM Omniums without any cross-compatibility issues.

    Thanks in advance

  • I used a gusset one which wasn't dreadful. Lasted a full cx season which is ok in my books. A bot wobbly now but doesn't creak

  • I've got a Praxis one on my mtb and its lasted about 4 times longer than a normal sram one so far and is still fine

  • Could try uberbike but maybe you need the BB faced and are you using a torque wrench?

I also looked around for alternatives, uberbike was OK and they are servicable if you have a bearing press but have gone back to SRAM and it's been fine if careful with the torque wrench.

  • Strange one, I've got just over 7k miles on mine.
What's actually going wrong, is it developing play or seizing up?

  • I know they have a bad reputation, but I’ve got over 10k miles on the one on the Pre Cursa and 7k miles on the secondhand ceramic blackbox 1 I paid £10 for on ebay because “it’s shagged, but useful for spares” needed a clean and a bit of grease. Thinking about it I’ve had 6 of them and only had 1 fail. After removing and replacing it after a repaint.

Now FSA ones on the other hand…

  • Internet does too much of a big deal of BBs, but in the end there's just two sealed bearings, cups in most cases and two dust seals.
I see plenty of ceramic speed ruined at work, doesn't mean it's bad.

  • Tell me about it. Blackboxs are £150ish new and the one I picked up had only been used for 2 months and left for a while. It was ‘seized’ but for £10 inc post (only bidder) I thought it was going to have been over tightened and the bearings crushed. I’d have used the outer and throw in some normal bearings. Turned out the seller had filled them with a grease that had set rock hard. Ceramic bearings are pointless on a bike, even more so on a gravel bike, but bling for cheaps is funny.
