Just buy a mouse

Yeah I know. The idea was to get a lightweight compact machine to take on site for work, so needing a mouse plus desk to use it on defeats the purpose slightly.
As well as a good deal on the machine plus software, I've done the boring legwork of getting it all installed and running, so there's so licences or setting up it's all on there permanently

Could be worth making a fuss with Dell. If the trackpad simply isn’t working for you then I’d aim to return it as a dud machine and push for a refund

I have the same laptop from work and the track pad detects anything conductive even a headphone cable brushing it.

I have a work laptop that had a similar problem- turning off touch click so that you had to give it a good shove to do a click made it way more useable. Worth a shot?

It's the callouses on my hands from many years work. when scrolling, one finger suddenly stops registering. Same when pinching etc to zoom. Loads of intuitive functions don't quite flow and it's riving me nuts. A freind used it and had no problems.
I have never had this problem with macs, and I'll be going back to a mac despite the annoying compatibility issues.

Yep interesting. I have the trackpad on maximum sensitivity which of course means every slight brush engages the click. Will give this a go.

Yeah, but having callouses I don’t think means you need to put up with a crap UX. Other trackpads (Mac) obviously work, so I’d be raising that as an issue with the hardware/software as much as with your hands. I think I’d be attempting to get them to fix it or refund, assuming you have the patience for the initial 1st line ‘have you reinstalled the drivers’ stuff

Yeah, so I wasted the 30 day returns period searching every dell and microsoft forum on earth for ways to fix the problem. everything reinstalled etc etc. If I wasn't working 50-60 hours / week I'd be doing what you suggest.

I need a new laptop, but only really ever had MacBooks. Is this good enough for editing photos / vids, bit of Civ 6 etc?
Or is this more of a worky work laptop?

I bought this specifically to store and edit photos and videos, as well as to start learning sketchup. It has double the storage and a faster processor than my current macbook pro.
I'm not a gamer but I also noticed it was much higher res. than my old machine. It's 1920 x 1080 with Integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics for intel i7.
