Did you want to keep the cotter pins? If not, all you need is a hammer, a nail punch maybe, and a block of wood ideally to sit the bottom bracket on so as not to screw up the axle/bearings etc. I've been using this arrangement for years....

Yes I could do that, which I normally do except today I didn't have that piece of wood. I just feel like it would be a nice tool to invest in as I deal with a lot of vintage bikes

Did you want to keep the cotter pins?
You can also unscrew the nut a half turn, tap a bit with a nylon hammer, unscrew, tap, rinse & repeat- I have done this and kept the pins in the past.
Edit: and all the plusgas/gt85/wd40 before doing this

Sadly I lost my patience this time and wrecked the two pins

Damn. If you’re looking to replace the cottered cranks, get hold of some old pins (60s/70s NOS) if you can, they’re far better. But you’re still into the tap tap tap, file back, tap tap tap & screw tight, ride for a mile or so, tap tap tap screw tight, etc. stage…
Can you go cotterless without too much pain? Or are you looking at Raleigh 26 tpi threading woes? My Raleigh Twenties are all about the Phil rings and un71/2 bb conversions. But I gather the cost of the Phil rings is now obscene.

I use some threadlocks and usually it does the job, it's for an old Peugeot race bike and I want to keep the parts so not going to convert it
I'll try to get some old pins then I've noticed new ones are also different sizes sometimes
Thanks for the advices! -

Cotter pin tool? Hammer, in my painful experience. I grew up with cotter pins and they are the devil’s work. Worst thing ever. Kill them with fire!

Oh! I know you :) you the kind person that gave me those missing parts for my bike last time!
Well the bike is completely disassembled except the crank so I can maybe come and borrow and bring it back in the day? I don't want to make you move for this -

will do I have your number, might be easier tomorrow I can bring the frame to your place in the day?
I am struggling once again with those stupid cottered pins crankset.
I know there is a few tools out there but they're all in the USA and shipping is costly.
If anyone has one that is willing to sell please let me know! Or if you know a UK seller that has this tool let me know too!
Or if someone in London is willing to let me borrow it for a day happy to do that too.
Pic is for reference I can do with any tool
