Vintage 27 inch Alloy Rear Wheel Wanted

Posted on
  • This might be a bold call but maybe someone can help who is into older bikes.

I'm restoring a 1940s / 50s racing bike frame (Ted Fry of Feltham) back to road use but need a suitable 27 inch rear wheel to fit the narrow dropout width of 115mm. The wheel needs to be alloy, have a large flange hub and be able to take a four speed freewheel block, narrower than the usual run of the mill stuff.

    Thanks,
    Shaun

  • Hmm. cant help really unless you are after a steel 27.1.1/4 rim with maillard large flange hub. Spins well is straight and will fit the requirement hub.
    Good luck with the search

  • I've got an Airlite Hub in a similar state to above laced to a Weinmann 27x 1 1/4 rim, but it has the inside of a freewheel stuck on it, and needs the spokes replacing...I'm pretty sure it's 115 though and the hub is authentically 50's and large flange.

  • Thanks Chaps, appreciate the contact and offers of help.
Really need something that's alloy to match the front wheel I do have and is in good nick. But if nothing else comes along perhaps I can come back to you.

  • I have several wheels that may well fit the bill. The hub spacing I'm not sure about for all of them as many are 70s/80s and so spaced for 5+ speed blocks, but could be re-dished for 4 speed. A few of the possible 4 speed ones are from the right era but are tub fitting, which I'm not sure would be what you're after. I don't think there were that many clincher alloy rims back then (mostly steel) except for the 1st gen Weinmann rim (with uncommon branding) and even those are quite rare. I suppose wheels with these rims would likely have 4 speed specific hubs, but they might also be five speed. I'll see what I have. It might help if you tell us what brands are on the front wheel hub and rim, unless of course it wasn't original to the bike.

  • Sent Walkmanman a pm.

Looks like I've now got a wheel lined up, thanks everyone for your help and interest.
