Ritchey Peugeot MTB dad's bike project

  • Hello guys,

Just wanted to share with you one of my latest project.

Got this nice looking old Peugeot MTB from my girlfriend's dad, it was sitting in the garage and I liked the paintjob. Goal was to make it a nice and comfy commuter.

The bike was rideable but needed some love, front tyre was toasted and they forgot the code for the lock.

I didn't want to spend too much money on it so I kept as many original parts as I could. In the end I ended up spending arround £100. The bike got fresh big tyres, a new drivetrain (Ofmega crankset was found on FB marketplace), got the Wald basket for £3 on FB market (great deal!) and fitted a chrome moustache bar I had in stock. I set up the bike in 1x8 with the classic sunrace shifters.

Very happy with the result, the bike has already found its new owner but I used it for a bit and was super happy with how it rides, very enjoyable!

You can find more pics of it on my instagram:

  • Tim Gould on the TT? Ex pro mtb'r from back in the day. Rode for Peugeot, who i believe had some of the frames made by Roberts. Or is this a klunker rolled out to the masses looking to take up this radical, crazy new sport?

  • sad to say the "shimano 18" on the seat-stay suggests the latter...

  • It is not a high end frame sadly, pure gaspipe with fancy name dropping and branding to attract the crowd, but still a nice bike to ride. Extremely heavy though

  • Great wee turn around for a tonne. Good work.

  • Cheers! Well every bike deserve to be saved even the heavy ones ;)
But the wheels on this one are full steel and are super wide, they do add a lot of weight to the bike, the handlebar is steel too so not helping! But the goal here was not to make a lightweight stud but a practical daily bike :)

  • Great exercise lugging these heavy bikes about though. Nice, practical build

  • Indeed.

  • Haha it is! But london is relatively flat so not a big problem :)

  • I think @Stoo61 's comment was probably using 'tonne' as the UK slang for the £100 you spent, but equally your interpretation of weight could be accurate! A nice looking basket bike, and £3 for the massive Wald is a bargain.

  • Haha yup that is what I meant. Didnt even twig on the double entendre until you mentioned it...damn, woulda been sweet if I meant that.

    @thebikefelix Great for £100 mate :)

  • Haha damn I've learned some english today :)
I try to keep my budget low on my build, it goes up so fast!

  • Turned out really nice and j'adore the color/graphics on this

  • Merci! That's what got me into the bike, the frame geometry is pretty cool and the graphics are nice
