Frame replacement recommendations

  • I had an off just before Xmas on my winter/2nd bike (alloy), and at the time largely thought I'd got away with it, which was a bonus as it was at reasonable speed. Long story short, I didn't; after a series of problems getting the gears to re-index and the brakes not to rub, the LBS confirmed yesterday
that the rear triangle is actually very slightly bent and I popped down this morning to take a look. It's hard to see with the naked eye, but once it's pointed out, you notice. Both they and the manufacturer have advised against attempting to straighten and suggested the frame is a write off.

Anyway, one silver lining is that I should (eventually) get an insurance payout that will cover some of the cost of a replacement. The second is I now have useful excuse to replace the slightly tatty frameset with something a bit nicer! I've progressively upgraded components over a few years and most of them would be perfectly good to use in a new build.

I've decided I'd like to go for steel, ideally (though I haven't totally ruled out alloy) and would be looking for something fairly light (obviously it's relative), rim brake, with sporty but not flat out race geometry, and ideally a BSA bb. I'd ideally like not to spend more than £1k, but could stretch it to £1500 if (really) necessary. Something like a Strael would have been ideal but they're disc only. A Cinelli Vigorelli would also fit the bill but it's a bit spendy.

So before I start browsing eBay, are there any new framesets that people would recommend? Cheers

  • 853 Rourke? Imagine prices have gone up a bit from what's on that page though.
