  • RULE NO.1 -v- LATE TO THE PARTY
    Tuesday 16th November, 7pm

    Court: Newington Gardens
    Ball: Green
    Format: 2x 15min
Attendance: 14 (inc. 3 Police officers)
    Referee: Mamma Mya

Earlier games this evening had been somewhat marred by unexpected rainfall. Coupled with a mossy court, there we fears that this might put the brakes on this fixture, or at least destabilise it. However, this proved not to be the case. Under bright floodlights and with an oft-invisible winter ball, play commenced at a speed befitting of two teams with considerable experience amongst them. Coming off the back of a victory in their other first round match-up, Late to the Party had beforehand looked a little more daunted by this meeting but started well. Their new recruit, Nico, played at a level well beyond his mallet-hours and made several attempts on goal. The same is true of Rule No.1’s lapsed contender, Rodders. Even if his bike had grown dusty, his skillset had not. However – neither team was able to break the deadlock and to the dismay and sometimes disinterest of the travelling support, the first half remained goalless.
After the obligatory piss-out and cig-in halftime break, it became apparent perhaps that this detox and retox technique had revitalised both teams – with goals coming within seconds of the restart. Making his big break back into the game was LPC’s own Jimmy White. Famed for his aim, he put up a real good fight – potting a hattrick for his team. This (and familial bias from tonight’s referee) wasn’t enough for Charlie’s trio though, who eventually succumbed to a two-pronged attack from The Bens. Mssrs Beagle and Roderick firing home five between them. It is then RN1 who take the plaudits in tonight’s tie but following a near-Titanic affair on the Regents Canal over the weekend, eyes will be upon them to see if Colin's cohorts can remain unsinkable throughout the season.
