  • Doing a little family tree for a cousin who’s getting married. Was reminded that we have two regicides in the family, William Hewlett and Edward Whalley.

Any of you folks out there descendants of the regicides?

  • Nope, althougj it's new info to me that the word can describe both the act and the actor

  • Nope probs the other team, the English side of my family were Catholic.
We did have a letter/receipt somewhere with a translation that some ancient relative escaped England after the civil war and served in Hungary with a bunch of other royalists with not much else to do

Regicide used as the 'actor' here. And plenty of mentions of Whalley too

  • Will check that out!

That’s pretty neat. There were a number of English Catholics serving in the armies of France during the same period also.

I read somewhere that the number one export from Scotland in the 16/17th century was mercenaries and that they are the forebears of noble houses all over Europe.

  • Is this a posh cunt thing?

  • There’s a great play called “the Rover” by Aphra Ben about a bunch of royalist soldiers hanging out in Spain like England fans at a football tournament while Cromwell does his thing.
It was written by Aphra Behn a female Anglo-Dutch spy/playwright. It’s an interesting part of history we don’t get taught much about.

  • Speaking out for all those that had to google regicide

  • Is this a posh cunt thing?

Dunno, is cutting of the heads of kings a posh cunt thing? Always seem to think of the posh bits of society as siding with the monarchy.

But hey, champagne socialism and all that.

  • Will check it out.

  • Povo cunts can also kill monarchs but they get jailed whereas I presume this is 'second in liners' killing their parents or siblings in order to get ahead in the race to power and that's kosher coz they're now Kings or whatever?

    #ihadtogooglethis

  • Nothing to do with the Kray twins then ?

  • My ancestors weren't regicides, but they were Dutch mercenary knights who came over with William of Orange to kick out James. There are many pubs in Belfast where I could share this information and not have to buy a drink all night, but they're not pubs you'd want to go into and the beer would be Tennent's.

They got a coat of arms and granted land by the king which is posh cuntish but the land was in Fermanagh so they probably should've asked for the cash option instead.

  • This is another bit of history not taught in Britain. That time we were conquered by the Dutch.

  • If you were on Reggie's side you were fine.

  • Povo cunts can also kill monarchs but they get jailed

Not in Russia. They did the lot of them.

  • I presume this is 'second in liners' killing their parents or siblings in order to get ahead in the race to power and that's kosher coz they're now Kings or whatever?

Nah this is parliamentarians cutting off the heads of kings because they’re right cock waffles (kings that is)

  • If you were on Reggie's side you were fine.

Dunno that Moz fellow seems to be a fan, and he is a grade-A bit of discharge.

  • and France I think, if that Charlie Dickensian bloke is to be believed.

  • the number one export from Scotland in the 16/17th century was mercenaries

Constantinople successfully defended itself against Turkish sappers tunnelling under the walls thanks to a Scot who was a renowned expert on using tunnels in warfare.

  • I’m not sure it counts as being conquered when you invite them over.

  • And what did we learn from that? Never invite over a Dutchman, they’ll act like they own the place.

  • Uwotm8! (in dutch accent)

  • kick out James
