Look KG166 - first build project - help needed!

Posted on
  • I got into road cycling last year and now have taken on a self build project for a frame bought from a member here. I'm swapping all the components from my Bianchi ML3 for this project.

I've swapped over the dérailleurs and the brakes and waiting for a bottom bracket tool to finish the drive train side of things.

I need some help with the headset fitting. Details further below:

I'm trying to use an adaptor to change the headset from a quill to a threadless but the adaptor in its current guise is leaving some space and I'm not sure how to tackle that. In the pictures below, you can see the adaptor and the stem and the space that's getting left behind. I'd appreciate any help in how to fit this.

It's my first ever project so please excuse the lack of knowledge in taking this on but I'm trying and willing to learn. Also included is a picture with all the spare headset parts that came with the Look and came off the Bianchi.

  • Good look /luck :)
Will the adaptor go down further in the forks / headtube if you loosen the bolt and push it down?
It should fit in the forks with just the bulbous bit at the top sticking out . ooer

  • Ooer, indeed :) It goes all the way in only if the wedge isn't there. The wedge is needed to tighten it but that raises the adaptor higher. The bolt seems a couple of cms longer so I'm wondering if that needs to be shaved off?

  • Ah my Look! :D

You're missing the threaded lock nut (says "record" on it) and there shouldn't be a spare bearing race on the floor after installation!

Hopefully this diagram helps. The quill to threadless adaptor you've bought should just slot in at the end after the fork has been correctly installed (but I would advise you try and get a quill stem instead of using the adaptor as it will always look ugly)

  • Oh and you won't need any of the spare headset parts from the bianchi so keep them separate or it will get confusing!

  • Thanks! popdown. That diagram is exactly what I needed. Was going mad with all the washers, etc. I will get a quill stem down the line but for now I'm trying to use what I have and the learning is really fun.

  • I've given the frame a good rub down with the cut and made the chrome bits all shiny. Any suggestions on which clear lacquer to apply and if it can be applied to the chrome also? Will put pictures up later.

    Thanks in advance!
