Bent derailleur?? - *don't think it's a bent hanger*

Posted on
  • Is it possible that my derailleur cage is twisted/bent? It seems to be at a slight angle to what the chain line should be and the chain is jumping on the jockey wheel as a result.

I checked the gear hanger both on the bike and off the bike against a flat surface and it seems to be straight.

Not sure what the issue is so any help/thoughts appreciated.

    See attached photos.

  • It's definitely possible to bend them. I'd still get a hanger straightener tool onto it first and retune the gears. It will help you "over correcting" any fixes you might decide to do to the cage.

You can get replacement cages for Shimano.

  • What the chainline is before the chain enters the cassette is important. This is restricted to the upper cage pulley. One only needs concern oneself with the immediate paths, not the irrelevant ones. A bent cage does not preclude spectacular shifting. It simply provides an opportunity to hinder it.
