Advice on bike purchase

  • Hi everyone,
(Hope this is the right place for this)

Just looking for some advice on finding/purchasing a road bike for commuting/exercising. Got a maximum of £300 available and pretty keen on 80s/90s frames (love the look of peugeots but open to suggestions). Was wondering what models are best in this price range and what to look out for in general? I see a lot of bikes with 'premiere' or 'competition'/'super competition' etc but don't know what it all means.

I'm also not looking to build the bike. I'm more than happy maintaining it and fixing up things here and there but not a full build.

    Thankyou!

  • If you've a budget of £300 I wouldn't be too concerned about the 'premiere' or 'competition'/'super competition' names of the bikes you're looking at. Unless there's a particular frame you're after which is going to be something you're interested in, it's probably not that important.

For a £300 price range, just try to get something which has a good build and is the right size. Bear in mind that for some of the 80's & 90's bikes, they'll have been pulled out of a shed/garage and won't have been ridden for years. They'll might need new tubes/tires/cables and servicing, so factor that into your budget. The saddle might be awful and the bar tape might need replacing. It's worth looking at the eBay and Craigslist finds thread you've posted on, as there's bargains galore out there for 80's & 90's frames. Like this Mercian which is really nice.
