Removing reluctant cog

Posted on
  • I’m trying to remove a rear cog from a wheel (I think I now know why the wheel was free...🤔). I’ve tried a meaty chain whip and mallet and clamping the cog in a vice and turning the wheel, it’s now soaking in Plus Gas but is there any other way? Ta..

  • Take the lockring off, put it in your bike and go do some skids
    (in a traffic free area)

  • This needs a tyre fitted and inflated.

Set up the chainwhip on the cog, stand on the non drive side of the wheel, have the chainwhip flat or the end of the handle slightly higher than the cog, position your hands one on the wheel at the opposite side to where the chain whip is and the other on the chainwhip, pick it all up and slam it back down on the floor.

Has never failed to shift cogs for me.

  • Do you think there's a chance the previous owner put loctite on the threads? If so, try dropping some acetone on the threads and letting it soak in, also you could try some boiling water over the threads.

There's always the rotafix method, works best if your tyre doesn't touch the seat tube when the hub is all the way forward in the track ends. https://www.8ballbikes.co.uk/rotafix/

  • Set up the chainwhip on the cog, stand on the non drive side of the wheel, have the chainwhip flat or the end of the handle slightly higher than the cog, position your hands one on the wheel at the opposite side to where the chain whip is and the other on the chainwhip, pick it all up and slam it back down on the floor. Stare intensely into camera.

    FTFY.
