  • After mostly riding a touring bike for the last few years I decided it was time to build something fun again.
I want a bike that I can take to bike parks and mess around on, I'm quite unexperienced with riding mtb's but I used to do lots of bmxing and didn't feel like buying a otp full on enduro bike, I was thinking about getting an On One Hello Dave but then stumbled across this awesome Ribble Reynolds 725 long travel hardtail which was basically exactly the kind of thing I was after:) 150mm travel and 27.5x2.6 tyres.
But I don't know much about modern mtb's so some help would be great!!

So far I have; frame, headset, stem...
I would like to keep this build under 2000€.
Any recommendations on forks, wheels, dropper etc?
I love the 105 groupset on my road bike so Deore on this would be nice but I find 12s a bit silly and prefer 10 or 11s.

  • I'd definitely go 12 speed, SLX is very affordable. For 2.6 inch tyres you'll definitely want 30mm internal rims, maybe even 35, laced to whichever Shimano hub suits your axle standards and has a MicroSpline body. The BrandX droppers have by far the best price quality ratio, cheaper will be shit and more expensive will mostly be for Instagram likes. For the fork you'll want the most expensive one you can afford, bike-discount.de often has good deals. Second hand forks are rarely a good plan unless you trust the previous owner to have serviced it properly at the recommended interval.

Now wait for the actual mountainbike experts to tell you how wrong I am.

  • A great mountain biker once told me “never compromise on tyres”

Until they come along, I basically agree with all that

    Shimano hub

Maybe not that. I'd try to budget for some DT 350

    @youramericanlover ?

  • I'd try to budget for some DT 350

What's the benefit? (Serious question with only a very small hint of skepticism.)

  • Shimano hubs are great if you know how to look after them

Not everybody does, so I guess it depends how inclined towards ( occasional ) maintenance you are.

  • I was actually thinking about lacing some Novatec boost hubs to Ryde Edge 30 rims

  • Also: do i want to go tubeless??

  • Underrated comment

  • Today of all days, the day the Rapha x Palace 'collabo' finally dropped, you try and goad me into a reactionary diatribe against tubeless but I won't Pete I WON'T

  • Rapha x Palace

    kill me now

  • The frame wouldn't be in stock until December it said on the website so I ordered one and thought I could take my time to find the rest of the parts... But it only took a few days to arrive.
The recommended forks should be; 27.5", 150mm travel and 37mm offset, they seem to be sold out everywhere, does anyone has a tip? Looking for one around 500€

  • Most forks I find have 44-46mm offset, this frame is designed for 37mm offset, will this make much difference?

  • Bit of an update; I went to pick up the frame at my parents place where I got it delivered. First thing I saw is a damaged headtube:( the box it came in was undamaged so it looks like it got dropped by someone before packing it...
I measured the headtube and it's also slightly oval, so dissapointing that they didn't even take the effort to ream and face it or even install the headset I ordered with it...
Anyway I sent them an email so let's wait what happens

  • Looks like the BB wants chasing and facing too. It's a shame I liked the look of these and they're progressive, but if the QC isn't there...

  • CNC has some decent discounts on Fox 27,5" forks. Maybe something to look at: https://www.cnc-bike.de/fox-c-50_22_222.html

  • Yea I was super excited about the design but I must say I expected a bit more of this frame. They didn't even take the effort to put the stickers on, they came separately in a little bag...
I already bought most components to build it up so I hope I can get this problem sorted quickly!

  • You're right to feel disappointed, it should arrive in perfect condition. The head tube should be faced otherwise it's probably going to creak. Regarding the offset of the fork, I wouldn't worry about that. Rockshox Yari can be picked up pretty cheaply brand new if you shop around, or an OEM Fox 36/Marzocchi Z1 if you want to go down the 2nd hand route.

  • Positive news: I've got most of the parts for this bike;
    -Microshift Advent X 10s gears
    -Conti 27.5x2.60 tyres
    -Renthal Fatbar
-Rockshox Pike forks (bit more expensive than I wanted)
-Ryde Edge 30 rims (thinking about swapping them for 35mm ones)
-Cool purple stem from china (looks very decent)

Negative news: I haven't received a reply from Ribble yet about the damaged frame.

  • Parts looks good. Not impressed by Ribble's delivery, finishing or lack of sticker installation even. Hopefully they'll sort things out for you.

  • Looks fun,

30mm internal is fine for 2.6”, I’m running 30/3” just fine.

10s drive is spot on, no need for more, especially on a bike that’s designed to get muddy!

  • Thank you! I will keep the 30mm rims.
I feel like 10s is perfect too, 12s doesn't make sense to me on a bike like this and I'm a fixie skidder anyways.
I have really good experience with Microshift bar end shifters and the reviews of this Advent stuff were really good so I thought I give it a try, it has a clutch too.
