• I have a destroyed SR Royal 165mm pista drive side crank that needs replacing. The non-drive side crank is fine. I know that these SR Royals are almost carbon copies of Campag Record Pista cranks but are they identical down to the mm? I'm wondering if I'm gonna be riding wobbly with SR Royal on one side and Campag on the other. Thank you!

  • You could probably ride with a 165mm crank on one side and a 170 or 175mm on the other and not really notice.

  • Deffo go and research the BB tapers.... Campagnolo uses ISO and SR may use JIS (as they are Japanese after all) but I'm really not sure.

I just checked Velobase for a few similar looking SR cranks and found some listed as ISO and some as JIS. You will have to hunt around a bit.

Then there's Q factor, which may not be identical. If it's within 1-2mm then I'd suggest that you could comfortably use pedal washers to make up the difference.

  • For clarification, I'd hypothetically be using 165mm on both sides. I'm new to Q factor...I'm guessing that's the distance in extension perpendicular to the length of the crank arms - i.e. widthways? There's a Velobase page specifically for the SR Royal chainset but it doesn't state whether the taper is ISO - http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx?ID=65966a6e-c066-49d0-93d2-447c2ff5e4ca

  • I've measured Q factor on quite a few bikes by measuring from the down tube to the crank face at the pedal hole on each side. Even on completely stock bikes it can be totally asymmetrical i.e., you're riding lopsided; 3mm wouldn't be unusual. So I don't think you need to worry about making up any discrepancy. Bear in mind that some accessories like chain guards and chain retention devices are actually mounted by clamping a bracket between the lip of the drive-side BB cup and the frame. That shifts the whole spindle at least 2mm to the right and there's no suggestion that it needs to be corrected.

  • Thank you for these comments - that’s really helpful. V much appreciated : )

Is a non-drive side SR Royal pista crank compatible with a drive side Campag Record pista crank?
