Non-tubeless sealant

Posted on
  • Has anyone tried using a sealant in regular tubes? I know there’s a few tubes out there with removable presets valve cores and I was thinking about buying a couple and putting sealant in there, either standard tubeless stuff, or something like Slime. I’m not really in the position to buy new tubeless compatible wheelsets right now.

EDIT: I’m not concerned about weight, more concerned about punctures that will hopefully be fixed by sealant.

  • I thought all tubes had removable cores? If so easy enough to put sealant in

  • Nah, not all. I think Schwalbe and Conti do.

  • I've done it before as a last resort when I couldn't get tyres to seal on my MTB.

Caffelatex has instructions on the bottle for it so they deem it ok, not sure about other brands, though it says it'll only prevent small punctures (eg thorns, etc).

Haven't had a puncture since, but don't know if that's because of the sealant. Either way it was easy to do.

  • You can just cut the tube, fill it and patch it too. Eventually it will dry out though.

  • My history of patching tubes is not so good, so I’d like to avoid that.

I’d only be using it to stop small punctures, thorns, glass, etc, so it might be the way to go.

  • I think part of the issue is when a tube is pumped up the tube expands a lot, so a tiny hole becomes bigger than sealant is designed to cope with - a tyre not so much.

  • Update. I bought some Muc-Off inner tube sealant and a Specialized presta tube with removable valve. Just put the sealant in a Schrader tube with no issues on my commuter. Haven’t tried the presta one yet... not sure when I’ll commute on that bike and I have had a history of valves tearing at the rim hole.
